That last part is a trip code. It's a measure (while not a bullet-proof one) to ensure that replies are from a unique user. In the "Name" box you type in name#text_string and the system will spit out name@crypted_jibberish. So, it's kind of like a password. # results in a self-cap (sorry, I'm spouting out 2ch lingo but I can't help it). If you're chums with admin you can request an official cap which is entered name!text_string and results in a nice name?crypted_gibberish.
This might feel a little lame, but just to show you how useful it is, I'll provide an example...

It's not the age of the threads that bother me, it's the quality and the frequency. I've bumped the occasional old thread as well, and they were quite successful. But these threads are appallingly bad, gain only one or two new replies when bumped and come almost every day.
Frankly I'm sick of seeing 4chan threads created 2 years ago littering the front page every time I visit, and I don't imagine I'm the only person who feels this way.

On May 11th I got the 100 millionth post on 4chan's /vg/, causing someone to post in 8ch's /4get/ /vg/ thread saying something like:
"Congratulations you are a small part of 4chan history, good job, you have made it into the wiki, we are a small dedicated group of blah blah we are the memekeepers, etc, please look at this page but don't edit it."

I've seen DQN mentioned once on /b/ since in a "lol this is DQN quality" context, indicating that at least a few other people from /sp/ or some of the other lone getters, or maybe some anonymous getball fans, have a new secret club.
I made /dqn/ on 8ch for shits and giggles and having just checked back there, it has received one post, indicating someone was bored enough to look for it.
So it's entirely possible that half of the people posting on DQN are now actually 8ch browsers because we forgot to post less to maintain the quality of the Elitist Superstructure.
That said, it could be worse. You didn't say "what's with all of these shitty stupid posts, are we being raided?"
