You must have hit the button twice. The first click launches the mittens, and the second click freezes them in a defensive matrix formation.

This is because the defense matrix design is only half finished. You see, our original intent was to have these smaller mittens combine to form a large enough mitten that could keep everyone's hands warm. There are two problems. For one, we can't freeze the launched mittens into a specific shape. Second, someone keeps launching the mittens that we do have every five seconds. As a result, we don't have enough mittens to form a large mitten even if we could freeze them into the proper shape.
