I've been using Linux as my main system for three years. Today, for the first time, I built my own kernel.
It was a difficult process - this was so hard for me to do. I had to try several times just to work out which drivers I needed for my SATA controller. (without these, i could not boot the system.)
Then, I found that the new kernel did not perform as well as the old one. encoding the same file with oggenc took longer.
So I experimented with CPU options, and waited for the annoying compile time.
I had to go and disable a whole bunch of different stuff. It took ages to do that.
eventually I got a kernel which performed slightly better than the original kernel in my oggenc test, so I'm using that now.
The distribution I use is Debian Etch.
here's my new kernel:
Linux ** 2.6.28Z-Sun28Dec #3 SMP Sun Dec 28 14:13:30 GMT 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It was so difficult, and then getting the NVIDIA driver to install was the worst of all. I'm not sure if it was really worth doing, but it was a learning experience.
Do you build your own linux kernels?
