For most people who do it, boat living is a respectable minimalist lifestyle and has been possible for a long time. The Patreon aspect does make it a bit more awful-sounding, but I can't really draw a huge distinction between that and the more normal income of pulling ashore for temporary gigs; ultimately, someone thinks they are paying for a good or service, therefore they pay.
