If your grandfather was a high-ranking soviet official it doesn't mean that living standards of ordinary workers (or ordinary engineers) were high. Go away with your soviet propaganda bullshit. Most people danced and cried tears of joy in 1991 (especially the educated ones who were able to finally immigrate).
I would never want to return back even if the modern "New Russia" is not that great at all.
