The problem is people have come to believe that disorders are a "chemical inbalance" that is innate to them personally, usually argued through genetics or through some sort of chemistry changing event like trauma, when disorders are so multifaceted and involve disruptions not only to individual processes of the body but entire cycles. Sleep, eating, exercise, motivation, libido, etc all have a cyclical component to them, and one cycle getting thrown off affects all the other cycles. Medications are meant to help, but they can't work without conscious attempts at working on these cycles. People have come to believe that taking a pill is sufficient because the problem is merely chemical. The sad thing is that common sense advice like exercise, eating healthy, setting sleep schedules, and so on, are looked down upon as condescending and "missing the point".
