IMO: FFVII, DDR (some of the early versions), Lumines (+2 hours of 100% concentration x_x), Silent Hill 1 (PSX), and others.

When was it? Back then, games where trapped in your mind as a puzzle. You would play it for hours, and then encounter a problem that pisses you off. You save and turn the system off. Sleep.

Next day, you hang out with your friends, talking about the girls, food and video games. You discuss your problem with the guys. No good ideas from them. You continue thinking of a solution as you drive back home. And then, BAM!! The answer to your question is quite simple; you mentally make a strategy plan to counter the situation, thinking it is one clear and

You rush to your bedroom and turn the system on. The game loads. You press a couple of buttons in your mission, and you go to another level. You sit back on your bed, a great smile drawn on your face. Satisfaction.

When was the last time I went through that same story?

Shadow of the Colossus and Ico were great o.o

Lets see... To fill your chriteria, I'd say these games:

Note, some of them have their dragging points, but I forgive them anyway. Also not counting Multiplayer games.

Earthbound, Illusions of Gaia, Shadow of the Colossus, Paper mario: thousand year door, Super Paper Mario, Star Ocean 2, Portal (short, but fun to replay again and again), Super Mario 64, (I want to say Xenogears, but it can be brutal at times but it will take you forever to finish it), Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario bros 3, Super Mario World, Disgaea.

There's plenty more, but i don't have my collection in front of me, so this is all I can think of off-hand.

Tales of the Abyss.

I love the 'Tales of' games.

I haven't had a game like what OP described since I played Shadow of the Colossus and Okami, which was 2006-2007ish.

Since then, Odin Sphere and Persona 3 came close, Persona 3 was very close, but I got tried of both at some point and neither quite had that "epic, holy-shit-this-is-awesome" feeling to them.

SMT Nocturne back in 2004, I got way too into that game...

Dead Rising was also a good one.

That game did rock, and was one of the games that got me into the PS, but a "spiritual sequel" did come out called Tao's adventure. I never played it myself, but I heard it wasn't well received.

Right now completely addicted to Star Ocean: First Departure. I tried playing the SNES version, but emulators all broke trying to play it. I'm having a lot of fun playing, all the characters (that I have, anyway) are likable.

>>157 You'll like the next one too, its got some nice replay value to it!

I guess the only gmaes that this can apply to is ones that are more user based then program based. Counter-Strike, Warcraft 3, and any other games that evolve over time are the longest lasting. Player versus player keeps makes the game different everytime!

Christ, my friend STILL plays "battleships" in Warcraft 3. that freakin game is THE most long lasting game I've ever seen. From the game itself, to Dota, tower defense, and the million other things you can do with it, it was some SERIOUS bang for your buck.

If you go that way, Starcraft and Half-Life (+ numerous mods) were probably the most long lasting... but War3 is probably headed that way, I guess.

I think one of the last REALLY GOOD games I've played has been Mass Effect. The game itself had many flaws, notably some weaker side quests and relatively short lifespan, but the universe was so credible (honestly, it's the greatest Space Opera setting I've seen in quite a while) and the dialogue so well written... I got all the way into it. Can't wait for the sequels.

Another Bible for Gameboy.

There a number of issues here and there that I have with it, but a portable game resembling Majin Tensei is pretty cool. Too bad we never got it with Revelations. I wouldn't go out of my way to replay it because it can be pretty long during each battle, but it really shows some effort was honestly put into it. I only wish the three Shining Forces on the game gear had explorable towns outside of battles too. The fact that CD didn't sucked. Even Crystal Warriors had them to an extent...

Good sir, I must confess I have no idea what you are talking about.

Totally right. Mass Effect is a great game. However, Games that got me in a gaming frenzy were Unreal II: The Awakening (best ending ever), Mass Effect, the Half-Life series and Mirror's Edge.

Mirror's Edge is a game that I've passed like, 8 times, and I still don't get tired of it. The story is mediocre at best, but it has a great setting, totally sold by one of the most artistic graphics ever. The main character is charming, and there is a general tragic but rebellious feeling to everything.

Indeed , Mirror's Edge is one of the best games I've played.

I have no idea what he's talking about either, but Shining Force is fun.

Another game I can't get tired of is Portal. I mean, yeah its short, but everytime I play it I have fun.

MGS4 was the last time I completely enjoyed a game. I buy a lot of games, so it's rare that I play one game at a time and don't touch any other games until I finish it. But I played MGS4 nonstop and wanted to replay it immediately after finishing.

Legend of Mana. Now, actually.

May not have the best story system I've heard about, but the battle system is a fucking awesome system.

It's a great game.

Bumping this shit 'cos it needs to be remembered.

The last time I played a good good game was Fallout 3. Seriously. There isn't anything bad about that game.

I'm playing Bioshock for the first time. It's really awesome, but maybe a bit too easy with that awesome lightning wrench combo. Big Daddy battles make up for it.

In my opinion, Legend of Mana was the best of the series. I know everyone loves Secret of Mana, but I hated that game. And Secret of Mana 2 had too much grind, even with an emulator with fastforward.

I have fond memories of playing LoM with my sister.

Though Dawn of Mana was pretty cool. It was cool to see the Mana world in 3D. Very pretty game.

Last game I got completely sucked into was Assassins Creed 2. It helped that this time around they developed the main character into an interesting guy instead of a silent vehicle for the gameplay. And goddamn, the game is gorgeous to look at.

Plus, I became best bros with Leonardo Da Vinci.

I dont have a console, but there're also many fantastic games on PC, for example, Mount & Blade, I really love it! It's a mixture of ACT, STG and RPG, you can grow your own character and join one of the five battling countries, enjoy the feeling of becoming a knight or a laird, just like the mid-country Europe.
You can meet nice people and be a part of the justice, or walk with thieves, robbers, do whatever you want.

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down

Great game, the only problem is the friendly ai, but it doesn't bother me that much.

It's pretty long and hard (cocks lol) and it has an awesome expansion pack, so it kind of sticks it to mw2 (cocks again) even though the graphics and such aren't as up to date.

I think I'm going to go reinstall it...

Hopefully someone plays online still, that game had the best multiplayer (and community) that I've seen in a loooooong time.

Half-Life (obligatory)

I was a kid when I first beat it, and it took me like a month to beat it. Nowadays it takes me like 15 or so hours. I just cannot figure out how it could possibly have taken me a month to finish.

The multiplayer is still somewhat (read: somewhat) still alive today on WON2.

Opposing Force

Better than half life. By a mile. More intense, better graphics (well... sort of. The laser dot is actually rounded! and the troops are more detailed! whoo!), better puzzles, better guns, better story, it's the origin of the portal gun, has a BFG which Half-Life was in severe lack of, and there isn't a bunch of time wasted with shit like carting around on a trolley car (as much) or jumping around xen like in half life.

I can't find any matches online though!!!!!! ;.;

I play the Age of Chivalry mod for the source engine, you can get it free through Steam. It's really good for being free and has a decent online community, also they still have updates so if you don't like it check back in a while and it'll be better.

Legend of Legaia(PS 1)

Too bad the sequel made the gamers shit bricks..

178 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2010-03-09 23:24 ID:RLHn/joA

I'm playing Messiah at the moment. It's great, and I've wanted to play it since it came out, so I'm glad to have it now. It's glitchy as fuck, but once you figure out how to deal with all that shit (crashing, long unskippable preview upon game boot up, etc) it's a great game.

179 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2010-03-16 01:30 ID:FHV7yfIq

Currently thrilled with the Left 4 Dead series.

That's the kind of multiplayer gaming I want.

180 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2010-03-16 03:27 ID:dGjDSjJJ

The first Halo was badass.

I still play the PC version to this day, and I got that shit when it first came out 7 years ago (I also had the xbox version;the online multiplayer was definitely worth the extra 40 bucks, believe me, even with the laggy servers).

181 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2010-03-28 14:27 ID:N0ymqHDI

VVVVVV (http://thelettervsixtim.es/) is awesome game and most old-school gamers who are sick of today's games tend to love it.

Minecraft. It's still in alpha, but over time it's improved in massive leaps. Beta is apparently coming soon.

March of 2007 I think. Phenomenal game.

Little Big Planet turned my world upside down.

On the PC end, Fallout 3 was almost an obsession. You have to turn the difficulty way up because it's too easy otherwise.

ust got the Serious Sam series off Steam for $10. I never played them before. I'm enjoying the hell out of the first game. I haven't finished it yet, I just got the Laser gun.
