Cube2/Sauerbraten (15)

Some consider it's as a minecraft clone, but they're completely wrong by the following reasons:

  1. Sauerbraten initial release was in 2003
  2. Sauerbraten was created after Cube
  3. It uses idea of octrees instead of cubes

It doesn't say much to you if you are not familiar with this game, though. Well, let me introduce sauer to you.
Basically, it looks like a fast-paced quake-styled first person shooter, but it has one killer feature: you can build your own maps using the built-in editor and try them out right in place, without any need to compile the map into game's native format using GTKRadiant or such kind of programs. And! You can edit maps collaboratively and synchronously! So some people may have an idea, gather and build a map in a day (this part may somehow resemble minecrap to those who have played it). And! You don't just build cubic maps, you can slope and make curvy planes. And after you created the map, you can share it with others as well as export it into OBJ and use for any purposes, be that map for other game or low-quality 3D model built in 10 minutes.
So, that's it. Runs on 2005's hardware, multiplatform, fast (playing ffa with ping of 300 is no trouble), allowing simultaneous editing and OBJ exporting.

Sounds cool, but I see a reason to call Mincraft, "Minecrap."
I'll give it a try though. Todays realistic shooters are boooring.

Did you mean "I don't see a reason"?

People use it for collaborative editing, and it takes lo-o-o-o-ong time to do it in minecraft. In cube2 the same is done in much smaller amount of time, and in a more detailed way.
Thus I feel a bit sorrow for this situation and call the game "minecrap". I don't understand, why do people still use it when there's much faster and powerful tool.

They're not even the same genre of game, are they?

Sure they aren't.
But they both have built-in map editors, which may look similar to a newcomer.

What ever happened to that RPG spin-off they were working on?

Oh man I loved Sauerbraten. It's fast-paced gameplay was extremely fun. It did "twitch" shooting right in it's insta-kill modes. Would highly recommend.

Why, oh why sauer has such boring weapon designs? I saw some old youtube videos with amazing sci-fi crossbows and other funky stuff. Todays boring revolvers and ww2-style sniper rifles look stupid in hands of quakeish decorations.

This game came built into the Unix OS I installed on my older laptop. It's very weird from what I remember. It took me a long while of messing around to grasp the concept and how to use the map editor. I never fully understood it, and repeatedly got my ass handed to me by regulars in combat.
