Since this board is slower than my autistic cousin, I thought we could post our thoughts about upcoming things in gaming and then come back awhile afterwards to reflect on how it actually turned out.

The two biggest things I can think of right now is the ps5 and Xbox series X|S. Will they be shit? Who knows. maybe they will make fun video games again. A new generation means new possibilities right?

I have pessimistic and optimistic thoughts.

I think that going forward, western game companies will stop focusing on gameplay and start focusing on graphics and story. This will make the stories slightly better, but the gameplay may feel disconnected from the narrative. That's only if they start writing good stories though.

My more optimistic idea is that game companies will realise we want to play games that are actually fun - western AAA game companies will lose market-share to Japanese and Indie games, they'll start trying to copy both... and eventually they'll start making fun games again.

I don't know which one will end up happening, probably a combination of both.
I actually have hope for the Xbox series X, it looks like it might be worth whatever it is.

Expect even less games due to ever rising development costs.
HD graphics development really was the worst thing that happened to the videogame industry.

VR (in terms of both display and control schemes) is pretty much the only thing that seems exciting in terms of new developments these days. Everything else these days just seems to be made to fuel upgradism and disposability. We had great games years ago and with moddability we can keep expanding them, so why get excited over something that's essentially the same idea just with fancier graphics and less moddability?

I don't think I played a modern video game in years with the sole exception of Doom 2016. Video games as a business fucking suck.

I wish this board was more active.

>this board is slower than my autistic cousin
>I wish this board was more active

And yet this may be the third most active board on 4-ch, after DQN and General.

Well, I was talking about the site, really.

I invested in a VR-ready PC a couple years ago, but I never actually ended up buying a VR headset. I previously predicted that there would be more good games but I was wrong and I'm glad I held onto my money. From what I understand, there's only a couple of really worthwhile non-coomer games. Those being Boneworks, Half-Life, and that one rhythm game. Not exactly enough to warrant all that equipment and setup.
At least I have my upgraded PC. I haven't had to worry about game requirements for the last 2 years, even if it's only 1080p 60fps.

There is also Superhot VR, which is quite an enjoable game from what i've played, and it makes you feel like you're in that one scene from the Matrix where Neo dodges bullets, but constantly

Superhots gameplay is pretty nice but its a shame that it feels like 75% of the game is anything but gameplay.

Your first scenario has been happening for the past decade and probably longer before then. Look at how many buggy and bad releases have been dropped, but still got purchased. Games don't need to be fun to sell anymore. Battlefront 2015 was so hyped up despite everyone knowing that EA is a shit company which pumps out garbage.
There is a wider problem in modern vidya though which is the fact that a lot of games are being dumbed down. Fallout 4 was an inferior product in every aspect but graphics (which don't fit the style well, but are better) and gunplay (which is terrible beyond low levels), and depends more on mods than previous Bethesda/Fallout games. Civilisation VI was so dumbed down from Civilisation V which already got rid of a lot of mechanics but is still an in-depth game if you play mutiplayer or mod it. SSBB was a worse game than SSBM even if played as chaotic as possible. There is a reason people still play Mario 64, TF2, SSBM, or SF3s. Those games are simply better than a lot of their competitions.
A lot of games are dumbed down to be easier for new players to play, but a lot of games are popular because they are hard or complex. Even casuals who aren't going to get gud and learn all of the advanced techniques are going to be attracted to a game with a higher skill ceiling because it gives them a better chance to get good at the game, or gives it more replayability.
SFIV died when SFV came out, Sm4sh died when Ultimate came out, and Civ6 only beat Civ5 in players years after its release. New games are good for a series since they bring new things, but a lot of games just aren't as good nowadays.

Well so far the new generation hasn't been all that interesting. The xbox literally doesn't have any exclusives yet and the main selling point of Halo Infinite got pushed back. I'm expecting that to be utter trash, I didn't like any of the 343 games so I don't have high hopes. I also just really really really hate the open world trend. They are never engaging because they are always so empty and they are almost always bland. I'm worried about Elden Ring which is rumored to be open world.

I haven't personally been interested in the PS5 offerings either so there is nothing really to say there.

For games I'm interested in, I'm looking forward to the Mass Effect remaster. I wonder how much they will change or will they add any cut content? Don't know how I feel about the recently announced Mass Effect 4 either, especially with current Bioware and how bad Anthem was.

I'm interested just to see how Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 turn out. I hated Fallout 4 and 76 so I really don't know what's going on with them. But mods might make it worth a pirate at some point.

Also I'm really disappointed in current VR, there are no good games with lasting appeal and I'm thinking of selling my current headset. I predict that there still won't be any AAA VR games for the next 5-10 years as it's still quite expensive and I think a lot of people are waiting for wireless headsets for it to take off. And no, I will not buy a Facebook device.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Cyberpunk 2077, it was an utter let down and a buggy mess at release. I suspected it would be disappointing when they had barely shown anything about a month before release and how many times it was pushed back when it was that close to releasing.
Prediction? They will patch the most prevalent bugs and get the consoles to good performance but they won't do much past that. I can't see them patching in different AI or something for cops. They will probably just make some free DLC to make up for it and that's it.

You're way too focused on this first entry in the franchise.
If they can't fix that mess of a game and DLCs are not attracting enough for their playerbase to pardon them then the developers will take the type of drastic measures that will leave the average mainstream player thinking that maybe releasing a fraud game is not too bad if eventually they're ''treated'' to what CDPR will ''gift'' them.
