Changing one's legal name... (32)

I'm going to change my name due to social reasons (having a foreign name when that's by far the most foreign thing about oneself isn't good, especially when it comes to searching for a job). It's not going to be, but is as plain as Jeffrey Smith.
Now, the first name I've decided on I've grown rather fond of, but the "Smith"/"Doe" type name I'm not so sure about.

I want to have a surname that isn't exotic, and preferably tied to the country I've grown up in and lived all my life (as well the only country I'm a citizen of and feel at home in). Yet, at the same time I'm worried that a too plain last name will make it easier for people to forget my name, and me in the process. My CV and merits may be worth remembering, but adding a too generic name to it might make it too foggy...

So, what I'd like to know, is if you think that my worries regarding the name I might pick are too far-fetched...
