Honestly, in a lot of ways imageboards shouldn't be too complex. The more complex they are, the more issues you have. Every vector of attack (even just posting illegal images/videos) means more effort for the staff, and I think that the modern internet almost makes 4chan-as-it-was to be hard to maintain.

I've had the theory for a long time that social-surrogate addiction is something that has to be dealt with, even perhaps banning social media at the state level, or at least limiting internet speeds to the point where only minimal sites are possible, preferably allowing for people to only check in every few days or once a week.

You can say that this is an attack on freedom or whatever, but I really don't care. The modern internet in nearly every aspect is a social ill and I'm sick of acting like we have to accept it.

Perhaps those old pre-web BBSs, and Usenet, had it right by letting people log on and download their new messages while posting the new ones they made while offline.
