How bad do you have to be before you can be branded as an otaku? What if you only like a couple of manga titles and a couple of anime titles but don’t even own any game systems, will you still be considered an otaku?
blah blah blah blah blah? blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah?
blah?
This is basically the same question as "how many games do I need to own before I can be branded Hardcore Gamer". This is to say, a rather stupid question. It's a matter of behaviour and lifestyle, not of belongings or taste or whatever.
Lots of people enjoy anime and are not otakus. Lots of people use a computer yet aren't geeks.
Besides >>2 made me laugh.
>>3 speaks truth.
I know some horribly cartoon network inspired Otako, who think that Dragonball Z is the epitome of all anime, yet down own a single DVD of it.
wow, I just went back and re-read my post... I feel that I kinda fail
woah! so there are geniuses here!
What's the problem? Didn't I answer your question, sir?
You are otaku when a normal person calls you otaku or any equal words.
>>8
you are kinda true, my bro / sis
(sorry, don't know your gender)
These callings kinda depends on the the society,
but to know if you're really an otaku, try visit the original place this naming was used, since most of the world population don't know a thing what is an otaku.
Anyway, this way is very stupid cos if by all means made possible by God Himself, you'll see that either way none of us outside Japan is an otaku, no matter the amount of manganime we have, we're light years away from them.
That's completely stupid.
Firstly, Otaku doesn't necesarily have anything to do with anime or manga. You could be an Otaku obsessed with trains or the military. Essentially it is the Japanese equivalent of a super nerd.
Secondly, it's a japanese word used to describe super nerds. Which means it can be applied to gaijin too. That is like saying that western toilets are not "toire" because only Japanese toilets can be called by the Japanese name for toilet. (Yeah, a mouthful I know, but you get the point). It's isn't only used on Japanese people obsessed with anime. That's like telling a Japanese person that they can not be called a nerd, because it's an English word. They will only ever be an otaku. It's the same thing in a different language!
It's just like anime. It isn't even a Japanese word. It's katakana. It's borrowed. A Japanese person calls western animation anime as well. It's there word for animation. We just twisted it so that we believe only Japanese animation can be called anime. That's why Japanimation is a much more correct word.

Thanks for all these info here. i'm admitting that i've no freakin idea about otaku (exept above).
Any how, my intention was that one shouldn't be annoyed by what other think of themselves. Startin now, i've a deep respect for you, bro / sis.
Forgive my ramblings and thanks again.
>>2 speaks the truth.
>Japanimation
I don't quite know what to think of this term. It's less prone to mispronunciation than anime. That's good. But it's long and a mouthful and looks weird in writing. Because it's a portmanteau D:
I'll stick with anime for now.
I use anime, but I was just pointing out that westerners basically created another meaning for it. Kind of like how we use Hentai, but it doesn't really mean anime porn.

You are extremely incorrect, redundant, ignorant AND stupid.
Case closed.
I don't really know why, but I really truly HATE the word "Japanimation". It might be more correct, but I associate it in my mind with people who know very little about anime and/or manga..."noobs," if you will.
I'll always say "anime."
Compelling argument. No, really. I am convinced. Fucking dickhead...
Remember Genshiken?
I agree with >>10 except for the anime-japanimation bit. I don't think there is anything incorrect about using the word "anime" for jap animations only. Afterall, English is a language that steals words from other languages anyway. Think Latin, and how we've cut up and manipulated words to mean new ones. Plus "japanimation" is not nearly as KAWAII DESU =^_^=
DUMB
THREAD OVER.
"Japanimation" kind of reminds me of Tokyopop and shit. You know, how on the cover it's like 100 PERCENT AUTHENTIC MANGA!!!! STRAIGHT FROM JAPAN!!!! I mean, Tokyopop doesn't use the word "Japanimation" but you get the point.
>>1
Yes. Get over it.
Being called one isn't even a bad thing.

same person.
Otaku.. Most americans don't even understand the true meaning of it so I wouldn't mind what they say. If you want to know what a true otaku is go to tokyo and look around a bit... You're sure to find a few.
Densha Otoko a good example?? ^^;
goint on the internets and post on 2ch doesnt make you otaku~_~
Posting here does. It makes you the loosely defined term weeaboo
that is.
Apparently if you like Suzumiya Haruhi you are instantly an otaku even if that's the only show you like.
being branded an otaku is the same as nerd/geek only towards the japanese influence this time around. obessing over japanese anime/games would consider you being an otaku. but by all means you would be nowhere close to a real japanese otaku who will easily blow you out of the water with their rehearsing of the introduction music from episode #23 where mina herself does the singing and lets not forget the matching dancing patterns and ultimate rare collectors edition dancing shoes which only 5000 were ever made >.>
... densha otoko has become popular has it not.
I love Mina's ankles. They are very moe.

what if i like her but never saw the anime?
Does otaku only refer to useless hobbies? Or can a person be otaku for more useful things like cooking?
