So, we all know that 2channel is insanely popular in Japan. But my question is: just how big is it? Is it the only big site out there in Japan, or are there other popular ones? What other kind of sites do Japanese like to go to? And just how many Japanese internet users actually visit 2ch?
I'm very curious about this.
Other popular websites in Japan include Mixi, Hatena, and Livedoor. They are all social/blogging websites.
Japan also has its share of portals: Infoseek, Excite, Yahoo, and Goo (the first two having succeeded in Japan where they failed in the US).
2channel seems to be enormously popular, though. I met a 26-year-old Japanese student in transit today and asked him about it, and he was surprised that the news of it had got to the U.S.
If you are interested in related websites to 2ch, you should start reading about Ayashii World. There is nothing written in English about it but Jpn Wikipedia is a good place to start.
whats the name of that japanese imageboard again?
>>6 WTF? no. its exactly like 4chan except japanese.
"Futaba Channel". "2chan" is the domain name, but it is not referred to by that name, as any japanese person would assume this means 2channel, at 2ch.net.
oh about 300000 posts a day on news for vip!
Can anyone with a mixi account describe to me what it's like? Since it's invite-only registration I can't look for myself. Is it basically like MySpace?

hi shii
actually I no longer care about the 2chan/futaba distinction as people don't conflate them anymore. I probably should have seen that coming

I have an account. It's really similar to Myspace.
mixi is closer to facebook i'd say, in terms of customization. I think you can only upload about three thumbnails, and i never figured out the commenting system, although i sent messages often and got plenty of friend requests. i couldn't keep up so i just quit.
I know it's too late to response..
Mixi is one of SNS that's similar to "hi5".
invite-only registration, viewer tracker, etc..
and many mixi users hate this tracker function.

As a fan of glossopoeia, I was surprised to find that Volapuk has been preserved on the Japanese internet.
The whole reason i started learning Japanese in the first place was because i liked the Japanese internet culture. I really like their internet they seem to have the mindset of if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. Their Yahoo looks exactly like Yahoo 2005 and GeoCities Japan lasted up until very recently in 2019 and a lot of the modern memes in Japan especially on Nico Nico look like they were pulled right out of the days of the old internet.
