I've been thinking a lot about the future of the internet and technology together. I predict within 50 years we will have a sort of internet where we can basically live in it. Hook something up to your head or whatever, and you're in. A reality that is pretty much non distinguishable from real life. Connected to people all over the world. I even imagine internet cafes, but people hooked up to machines connected to this alternate world, for long time periods. This is something I find very interesting. The Matrix, The Wired, whatever you want to call it, I think it will come before the next century. Thoughts?
Everyone will enter virtual reality permanently, except for religious nuts who will eventually destroy the machines, killing the people inside them. Bad end.

We're already living in a virtual reality. Society is an abstraction of real life, where people labor for pieces of paper and buy things as a substitute for learning skills and finding real enjoyment in life.

I find your views interesting and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
It must not happen. Science would die due to lack of reality, and a heirarchal system will be introduced by developers, unless we get to it first and make sure that it can not be done.

Go back to bed, Lain.
You should watch Zegapain sometime.
We have reached the maximum output of our physical bodies, and yet our minds have so much more to learn by the time we physically deteriorate, if we were to allow our brains to play while our bodies slept and rested, we could preserve ourselves longer without the daily stress of gravitational pulls to and from. The mind could visualize its existence, like a very visual dream, conscious, yet unconscious.
Who knows, maybe the union of the two could bring peace to the population of the future? Maybe not.
While it looks like a promising idea, I fear that personal and mercantile interests will drive away creativity and freedom of thought.
On the other hand, maybe I'm being paranoid over a hypothetical subjet. Still, I don't feel that we, as the human race, are ready yet to plug any random thing in our heads. It just doesn't seem right, as with other social problems we are currently facing.
On the third hand, I'll be the first in line to get implants!

I doubt we'll see these technologies in our lifetime.
But after whatever cataclysmic destruction that befalls us, erases our existence into thin air, from the ruins left behind, the dusty computers, the near-broken cars, a newer, better world will be formed.
And maybe one day, through a similar freak gene pool randomly assigned to other genes, through a similar reproductive raffle, our like chemicals that define "you" will come to sight once more to discover the world we once dreamed of, through alien eyes, taking for granted the same world we used to long for so dearly.
The future is around us, our technology was that of mythical stories in the past, we live in the dreams of cave men.
>I doubt we'll see these technologies in our lifetime.
Video games are pushing the boundaries and driving the need for new technology that will make it possible. One day we will have it all.

A Perfect virtual reality, just like a movie. You meet someone, you are soul mates, you have a big fight and you break up where you end up boozing yourself to death and eventually everything works out and there is a happy ending.
Now we talking abotu this, wasn"t there an episode in Ghost in the shell where people escaped life just to watch a movie for eternity and actually feel they are a part of it..instead of the shitty reality that is life.
That is what i want.
>>10-12,14
we already have the technology. it's called drugs.
>Now we talking abotu this, wasn"t there an episode in Ghost in the shell where people escaped life just to watch a movie for eternity and actually feel they are a part of it..instead of the shitty reality that is life.
Im really glad you mentioned this. I was going to mention it as well. Yes there was an episode like that, but they just found the movie really amazing and decided to stay in that guy's cyberbrain (for those who havnt seen it, basically they were "online") to watch the video over and over. But essentially, ya they chose it over reality.....
epic, and probably true. I can see that happening actually.
that is a good point, ive been thinking for a while how the most useless and valueless item possible is what we all value the most. If it wasn't designated as having worth, it wouldn't ever be used. It isn't that good to burn, and i doubt it could be used as toilet paper or something.
>...a heirarchal system will be introduced by developers...
true. they could program in that human flesh tastes better than chicken or something like that if they felt like.
........ no.
>......... no.
He's right about the drugs, you know. It's not a technology in the traditional sense, but it is nevertheless a highly significant source of fantastical imagination stimulation. Movies and video games and books and music all excite chemical reactions in the brain, thereby producing emotion and a sense of fantasy. Drugs just do it in a more intrusive way.
Link very related to topic, it's also NSFW.

Also, I'd like to note random an hero coreans and WoW-linked IRL baby deaths.
However, I'd like to think of VR as a good thing.
I would NEVER involve myself in this if it connected the mind to the internet. Internet mind viruses are a very frightening possibility.
>>20
You'd be involved no matter what. Mind virii depend on memetics, and sooner or later BAM. You've just lost The Game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meme
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viral_phenomenon
Such systems designed for public consumption would not have "mind virii" other than memes. A brain and a computer are two different mediums divided by a barrier/interpreter (brain/sensory info -> interpreter -> data; data -> interpreter -> brain/sensory info) which would serve as a failsafe to drop crap information (it would be trivial very early on). Also, making a mind virus requires extensive studies into neuropsychology and related technologies being used, making the amount of people who would be capable of pulling stuff off really rare (short of government agencies, but they have politics and ethics to contend with). The worst a person may get is a seizure due to a medical condition combined with flashing lights in VR (due to /b/tards and the like), mental scarring due to goatse exposure (again, /b/tard related), or disorientation due to sensory confusion (various reasons).
VR is NOT The Matrix. You wouldn't die in a VR unless the thing is hardwired into the brain and has some way of killing brain cells directly (electric shock) or are dumb enough to an hero IRL because of something happening online (MySpace, WoW, iPod, boy/girlfriend, emo, failure).
>>21, memes! The greatest contribution of angry Dawkins! But these are only one of three mind virii.
1) Memes: ideas attractive to human psychology; cultural genes [net increases exposure]
2) "Crowd Poison," the feature of non-idealists to be absorbed and defined by collectives [net could emulate with emotional manipulation][tool; demagogue as sculpter]
3) An nanetic chemical virii physically created by a net uplink affecting brain matter, [drug creation risk increases w/ link complexity]
Obviously, 3) is unlikely for anyone careful, but most people aren't. Artists and hackers would do well to not risk anything other than a custom uplink so virii wouldn't work. Basically, unless built to release drugs the worst you'll get would be engineered withdrawl from surfing's chemical stasis.
I love VR, but total connection has risk. I doubt I'II ever reccomend implants.
Could devices ON the temples offer stimuli or motor control?
You are correct sir!
You are incorrect sir!
You see, drugs and the virtual world are very similar not just in the ways that >>17 put it but also because both open the possibility of sampling different ways of experience. Both are ways to literally hack the mind and make it do what we want it to do. Imagine, being in a virtual world in which all the feedback has been encoded in a strange way, like synesthesia. You can taste sound and hear touch. Same thing works with drugs. You influence and alter what your brain does. I love them both. There's so much power in the brain just waiting to be unleashed!
As for an actual VR, I don't know. I was just talking to a friend about this, ironically IRL, and was saying how disappointed I am when I think back to my childhood, reading Neuromancer and watching things like Blade Runner and Terminator. These movies and books had so much hope and optimism, maybe not for us as a species, but for our technology. Yet, we're still not there yet. But, maybe, in the future, as individual aspects of these technologies like machine-brain interfacing and high end and real-time computation along with the new quantum computer, we may see something like real VR happening in the lifetimes of our children or grandchildren. We're getting there I think, it's just going to take some more time but we'll definitely get there.
I think I would just have virtual sex all day.

A year here and he still dreamed of cyberspace, hope fading nightly. All the speed he took, all the turns he'd taken and the corners he'd cut in Night City, and he'd still see the matrix in his sleep, bright lattices of logic unfolding across that colorless void… The Sprawl was a long strange way home over the Pacific now, and he was no console man, no cyberspace cowboy. Just another hustler, trying to make it through. But the dreams came on in the Japanese night like livewire voodoo, and he'd cry for it, cry in his sleep, and wake alone in the dark, curled in his capsule in some coffin hotel, his hands clawed into the bedslab, temperfoam bunched between his fingers, trying to reach the console that wasn't there.
