How does one wean oneself from excessive internet usage?
I am usually not bad when school's in session, but once home and on break I regress to old habits.
I cannot resist turning on the wireless reception on the computer; I have tried going somewhere without internet connection; still I fail.

How do I wean myself from using the internet as escapism?

Break your router, or even better, have a relative lock away your monitor.

Sell your computer and buy a bike, it will take you many places!

well, I often need to use the computer to do school-related assignments and daily tasks.
I'm talking about the time spent idling between useless sites.

Well, if it doesn't interfere with your studies, what's wrong with wasting time on the internet?

Anyway, you can just find something better to do, like learning to play an instrument or reading a book...

It's called self control. Practice it.

Just find something more interesting to do.

And if you can't find anything else that holds you're interest, then there isn't really anything worth complaining about, is there? As >>5 said, if it isn't interfering with your school life, there isn't really any harm in it.

Get rid of wireless.
Get a slower connection.
Make sure that connection is in an inconvenient place. (somewhere other people are around often and can see what you're doing, like the kitchen or living room)
Get a very uncomfortable chair.

Soon you will want to spend less time on the computer.

Getting a girlfriend, despite being a really stupid sounding advice, works.

>>8, Ha, sounds like when I'm at school! Yes, it does work.
in combination with >>9's suggestion (but I found a bf instead): he keeps me busy most nights, so that helps keep me offline! ;D

>>8さん, it won't help, I think. As far as I remember I just turned my display that it wasn't possible to look at from the door side. and my chair was awful, but I just changed poses more often.
Slow connection is not a solution either. I connected via my cell phone (GPRS) back then.

Getting a girlfriend didn't help me, she's just as addicted as I am. Plus it's LDR. :(

>>12さん, you might as well call her "a pen friend". You should get outside and meet somebody AFK.
Try joining some online community which has lots of offline meetings, you might meet some interesting people there.
