I've had numerous conversations both in real life and online where I would respond to them thinking that they were most clearly joking or being ironic, continuing the conversation with them, only to slowly realize that they might actually not be joking. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've accidentally walked into an argument thinking that the other person was just playing a game where we both pretended to be counterparts to each other's strawman. It's kind of ridiculous. And every time, I just come out of it thinking, "Wow, was it me who's an idiot for thinking for a moment there that they were actually taking me seriously? Or were they just actually taking me seriously?"
