Heyuri's /lounge/ board. Heyuri in general is supposed to be a Futaba clone. Just make sure you read the rules. If you post any newish post-2008 4chan stuff there they will ban you. Theres the new world2ch.net but its less active than 4-ch.
4taba just isnt the same
Futaba channel maybe. Nowhere else as far as I know just uses base futaba. The jap sites look like they haven't adapted at all to the times. It looks fucking ancient even by imageboard standards. And slow is the old experience. Imageboards and textboards were mainly always a niche thing. Only 4chan, Futaba channel and 2ch the textboard were ever fast or notable. For the most part they've always been a few guys splitting off some niche. Like 7chan being elitist, 420chan for stoners, 711chan for raiders, 99chan for just oddballs, and so on. But these were always fairly slower. But you learn to like it. When you get too much activity it really diminishes the quality. So you need to find a sweet spot somewhere.

how active is futaba these days? I heard most of the boards outside the main nijura ones are mostly dead. I get the sneaky feeling that a lot of people in the imageboard/textboard world romanticize 2ch and futaba and both those sites were a lot shittier than we’ve been led to believe.

I know futaba is seen as the land of milk and honey by people who enjoy the topics popular there, but I don't think 2ch was ever romanticized that much because of its size making the userbase much different than what one would expect if they only know western textboards. The post-Jim clones and the smaller boards, maybe.
