Honestly, non-Japanese "mangaka" have the ability to write or draw something as good or as bad as and Japanese does, however I do think that if you are not Japanese, then you cannot call yourself "mangaka". What do you think?

I think they should just call themselves "comic book artists". There's no shame in it. Manga is Japanese, just as manhua is Chinese or manhwa is Korean. Feel free to describe your comics as "manga-inspired" but you are not a mangaka and your comics are not manga.

All manga are comics and all comics are manga. They're the same thing, and that also applies to cartoonists; all cartoonists are considered mangaka in Japan, whereas the West would call a mangaka a cartoonist.

But Western artists do need to stop calling themselves "mangaka" if all they draw is comics with a "manga" aesthetic. It's foolish.

It doesnt matter if the actual mangaka is japanese because its all about the art form. If someone uses a japanese style of drawing to draw a "comic book" whether their mexican white or japanese it stops being a comic book and starts being a manga because of the art form thats used. A mangaka is simply an artist/author of the manga. This is like asking is a novel still a novel i a japanese person is the author? It's really stupid...

This looks off to me. I can't place my finger on it but there is always something a little off about all the Japanese inspired comics I have seen by western artists. Maybe it's the ink work. There is just some depth missing there. The backgrounds are bad too, pretty much missing most of the time. The scenery is one of the best parts of Manga.

there's no such thing as a "manga style".

What if it's in the style of manga? In fact I have no problem with Western comic artist describing their work as "manga style", as long as they don't actually call it "manga" (because, by definition, it isn't).
