I'm poor and broke as you can get so piracy is generally my only default option. But if I find a manga that is of superb quality, then if I can, I buy it.
Provided of course that it ever even gets printed in the states/english.
If I buy manga, it's to collect it. I like having things on my shelf. Generally I download manga when they are scanlated, then later buy them if I like them.
I often buy. Sometimes I read it at a secondhand bookstore, Book Off.
The why I buy them is to read lying on my bed.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who buys manga. I always feel bad when I read a meta manga where the protagonist is poor mangaka who cannot sell his work. ('A` )
The only manga I've bought has been the first volume of "it's not my fault I'm not popular", which I bought because I enjoyed it, and also everyone on 4chan was doing it. Oh, and the author has acknowledged their non-Japanese fans (which is something I want to encourage).
Apart from that, I've also ordered the first volume of "One Piece" translated in Swedish. I'm not terribly interested in "One Piece", but I've been trying to learn Swedish. So I thought it would be fun.
In what way did he aknowlege his western fans?

Frankly, I'm tired of American publishing. I've made a resolve to learn and buy Japanese from now on; mostly for the quality which America copies pathetically lack. The latest series I've been buying had the color pages dropped out of nowhere which infuriated me. I put up with the inferior and frankly shit translations and no unique covers like the original but that was the last straw.
Yeah, sometimes you find a rare treasure but there are some things that I read online which are AMAZING and I just can't help but want to reward the author by buying their stuff.
Is it such a crime to want decently published manga with a semblance of quality so that I give the Author my cash?
I've bought ALL mangas that I loved, every single volume is bought. But now I just rely on english translations provided by different groups because I find myself reading more and more new mangas...and these new ones aren't available in the country I live in.
I surf Usenet, chans and forums about manga and if there's something I like I check the prices out and import via a proxy. A lot of old manga are 10Yen on amazon or something so it's ok. If I lived in Japan that'd be a lot easier but well. Or when I like a manga I check out the authors other works and then decide.
I like to Manga buy for the more cliche reason in that I enjoy holding something physical and it feels more personal than pixels on a screen.
I don't like buying manga generally, it feels like a huge waste of space and getting a digital copy to read on a tablet is just more convenient, but having physical copies of volumes I like or complete series (if short) is nice. Only other reason I bother with buying manga is to support localization of something I really care about and wish for it to be successful (JoJo hard cover release and LotGH novel for example). Otherwise I get it in Japanese or buy artbooks from the series instead.
Yes. The same reason why people prefer reading books instead of e-books. But I won't ever spend much money on this, I only buy ~1 manga per month.
I rarely buy manga, this is mainly because of the poor quality and format of the printing.
I buy a lot of comics in the trade paperback format but manga is usually printed in a smaller format with lower quality paper, and lacks things like gutters.
The few mangas I've bought have been outliers in quality, these are mangas released from drawn and quarterly and a few reprintings from fantagraphics.
I usually buy manga that I've read from Book Off, they have a good sized selection for pretty low prices. Reading online is convenient, but holding a book in my hands feels much better in comparison.

Oddly, my preference is similar to yours for non-manga books but the opposite for manga in particular. There is something distinctly satisfying about being able to pinch-zoom each panel and page to the size of my liking, particularly as someone with nearsightedness and high astigmatism.
This preference may also have something to do with the fact that my non-manga reading choices lie exclusively within the realm of non-fiction; that would be a fitting allegory, with the analogue/tangible publiching medium representing the contents of the analogue/real world and the digital/intangible medium representing the digital/fictional world. Such is fodder for another discussion altogether, however~
