(◕ฺฺܫฺ←) Hi! DO you know Kiyoshi KUROSAWA?
otoko ha tsuraiyo
The Glamorous Life Of Sachiko Hanai is an absolute riot. Highly recommended.
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade is a pretty good movie, here's a Synopsis of it ( copied and pasted from a site )
Synopsis: Shinobi: Heart Under Blade centers on the drama resulting from the war between two ninja clans in the early part of the Tokugawa era. In the film, Nakama Yukie portrays Oboro, the granddaughter of Ogen (Lily), the respected Iga clan matriarch, while Odagiri Jo plays Gennosuke, the son of Danjo Koga (Minoru Terada), the powerful Koga clan leader.
Japan has been united and Peace is starting to spread across the Land. The Iga and Koga clan have been have been at war for over 400 years but a treaty has been put into place to maintain order. This is all about to change when the nefarious Nankobo Tenkai schemes to gain more power by eliminating both Ninja Clans thereby removing any possible threat to his ambition. By influencing the Lord of Lords Tokugawa Ieyasu, to hold a contest pitting the 5 best warriors on each side, he hopes to eliminate the toughest ones from each clan first. Predictably, Lovers Oboro and Gennosuke are tasked to lead their respective sides to victory with survival as the prize.
1) Tada, Kimi Wo Aishiteru (Heavenly Forest)
2) Desu Noto (Death Note 1 & 2)
3) Ima, Ai Ni Yukimasu (Be With You)
4) Densha Otoko (Train Man)
5) Nana 1 & 2
I found Tony Takitani to be the second best film I've seen all year (beaten only by The Godfather, which I've only just got around to seeing), I've certainly watched it more times than any other this year.
If you've enjoyed any of Makoto Shinkai's animations and the themes he explores there, there's a good chance you'll like this as well.
yua aida owns yo penis
All About Lily Chou-Chou really is a film that makes you think; it's about 援助交際 (paid dating.. sometimes/often sex), bullying, and ostracizing in Japanese schools. A very powerful film, and the soundtrack is excellent too.
Even people who have no interest in Japan have told me the movie haunted them for days-- it leaves an impression!
Here's some tragic ones:
Nobody Knows
A Long Walk
Shinobi
Sekai no chushin de ai wo sakebu
I also enjoyed movies that were done by director Shunji Iwai.
Survive Style 5+
Ping Pong
Most of the soundtrack for Ping Pong was done by Supercar. That should be reason enough to go watch it. And Survive Style 5+ was directed by the dude that directed most of Supercar's videos. Oddly enough, I saw both of these movies before I heard of Supercar.

Really any of Akira Kurosawa.
Yojimbo and Sanjuro are good, although they're almost the same movie.
Rashomon is one of his most famous ones, especially from a film studies pov.
Ikiru gets away from samurai, and is good, but is also like 40 minutes longer than it should be.

I'm usually just a lurker here.. today after a trip to akiba I was on the train when a drunken man started harassing passengers. He began bothering a beautiful woman.. I used whatever courage I could to stand up to him, I was so scared :(
He hit me and knocked me down with one blow. I was so lame. But the woman helped me up. At the police station she asked me for my address to send me a thank you gift.

People of caste bottom layer of Japan
I dont understand what is so good about tampopo
For me it was dull and boring.
Onmyoji (2001) was good. Not too many Heian Period movies, and the jp mythology and wizardry was fun.
I liked G.I. Samurai, it's kinda like GATE where the JGSDF gets transported back to the sengoku era
Of course battle royale is a classic and also is good
