I reckon loads of actors believe that their genius will transform a shitty script. Especially if they see a part that has "Oscar" written all over it. He was kind of right in that everyone has praised his acting in that role. I personally would have been very cautious especially since biopics of music figures are notoriously hard, and Walk the Line set the bar so high. JoaquĆn Phoenix can actually sing. And (perhaps a controversial view) Johnny Cash was a better songwriter.
