I never got why the I–III was supposedly worse than IV–VI — I thought it was better.

Rather, I felt that the new trilogy went back to the first one with many of it's flaws. At least the second trilogy had a somewhat interesting political narrative going on, in showing how much the republic was failing under it's own weight and how it's fall was partly caused by the dogmatic Jedi who failed to see what was onder their noses.
