Search for someone who shares an interest (anything) with you and talk to them. Eventually you'll get to talk more to people that person hangs around with, and you're on your way. Not that easy, but efficient enough.
If you can't find anybody that shares any interest with you, just be attentive for what they like/talk about and read about that. Be open.
