Would i be considered to be an otaku? (83)

i have a lot of manga, like +300 plus that i have been collecting since i was a little kid. and i am not saying that being an otaku is good or bad, but do you guys think that i would be cosidered to be an otaku? i mean, i know i have a lot of manga, but most of the reason that i have so much is just the sense of collecting them. of course, it's not like i hate them or what not, i do enjoy reading them. but i am just not obsessed with them as the average "manga otaku" would be considred to be. what do you guys think?

My collection just hit 200. At the present point in time my problem is that I obsessively buy each series in order. So I have to wait until the next volume is in stock, and then the volume after that sells out.

Thank goodness Death Note is finally over.

Mail is over too though, and I thought that had heaps more mileage even considering how cheesy it was. :-(

Being an Otaku or a Maniakku nowadays, for the most part, isn't necessarily as big of a thing as it used to be. It's really just liking something a lot, or pursuing a specific thing with a bit more passion than you'd stereotype as average.

I think it's better to be an Otaku or Maniakku of sorts nowadays. It makes your future easier to decide for yourself if you plan on going into that field, (whether it be technology, comic, cartooning, writing, etc,...), and it also makes it easier to have conversations with people of the same interests and such.

36 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-07-13 16:23 ID:LuVlJ1/g

I always understood that an otaku related more or less to a "useless" field. Such as manga, anime, ramen or trains, which don't really contribute much to one's life, unless you stretch it quite a bit.

I mean you could make a profession, but they're quite rare. Cooking, sciences and so on, I always thought didn't really count as otaku material, because they can easily be transformed into jobs and are usefull skills.

37 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-07-13 19:35 ID:md2VVjSy

>>36
That's a very legitimate way of thinking on it, considering the amount of people that don't make it a profession, and the amount that the word "otaku" refers to the specific genre of anime, manga, etc,...

It is a rarity to see someone actually continue on in the that type of field, much more-so than in Japan. But the general thinking that it is a useless field would really refer to most forms of entertainment today. And I'm not comparing well written story lines to manga or anime that are written solely on the basis of the fantasy of the author. I'm comparing a well written novel to something like Death Note and such. Something that holds meaning beyond it's story.

Unfortunately though, the majority of the use of the otaku do follow it in a more or less useless way.

I don't believe you are an otaku, because an otaku is literally defined as someone who is so obsessed with manga and anime that they lose hygiene and sleep, and even skip out on eating.

39 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-07-16 23:14 ID:BjmiL/xn

>>38 I thought an otaku was literaly defined as a nerd. Actually, wasn't the word otaku an archaic reference to a prestigious family or something along the lines, and then therews some anime in which a nerdy character referred to eveyone as 'otaku' and it became synonymous with the word 'nerd'? I'm pretty sure that's what happened... So any nerd can be otaku, right? And over here in english speaking countries, otaku just means anime/manga nerd, generally. They don't have to lose hygeine or sleep, right?

40 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-07-17 02:58 ID:md2VVjSy

>>39
yeah. It's defined more as a nerd or geek.
It's just really more of labeling a person that is a geek about anime/manga/game genres.
The label Otaku comes literally from the Japanese word otaku which means home. So it's really just someone that would prefer to stay home and enjoy the Otaku genres of entertainment to going out and socializing.

109 Manga, 300Gb of anime saved up, 52 PS2 games, modded PSP, DS with R4 and thousands of burned Japanese games for psone but I only basicly play the fighters, rpgs and Super Robot Taisen for those, unhealthy obsession for Touhou (can beat it on lunatic) and stepmania and IDX...Am I an Otaku?

Got me beat.

Let's see what I got..

81 Manga, 77 Manga(approx. and on my PC), 18 episodes of anime on my PC, 5 volumes Newtype USA, 26 DVDs Anime + Animatrix, Wii and 5 games, PS2 and 29 games, PSP and 8 games, DS (1 game and a couple GBA games), about 20 PS1 games.

I would say most of the people that've spoken thus far on this topic are. Nothing wrong with it. (^_^)b

Yes we should take pride in what we are...after all we are only doing what we enjoy.

44 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-07-20 04:50 ID:oyLSyZCn

Just over 200 manga (in paper), 2-3 manga on hard disk (what can I say, I don't like reading on a computer screen), about 20 anime box sets, around 1.5TB of anime burned to DVD, a lot of which is going to go onto my new hard disk array soon so that it can be more accessible.

GameCube games around 15, DS games around 20. Wii games around 4 but that's THEIR fault, not mine.

I don't play many PC games since there are rarely Linux or Mac ports.

But I only have 3 eroge which means I am not an otaku.

If you played kanon then you are an otaku...Kanon is the baptism of an otaku

No you're most likely otaku. the term otaku doesn't revolve around just that one thing.

I know, I was making a funny. One of those eroge is in fact Kanon so I probably do actually qualify anyway.

Let's see...

If you're obsessed with just one series (ie; Naruto and Inuyasha, and no, I'm very sure you're not this kind), no, you are a lameass poser and more of a Star Trek Obsessive.

If you think the world revolves around Anime and Manga, then you're a total helpless obsessive.

If you like Japan and it's culture (well, one part, not everything) in general, then you are a weeaboo (no offense).

If you think the world revolves around Japan, then you are a Weeaboo Extremist.

You, me, and approximately 90% of 4ch are choice 3, thus meaning we are choice 3; sane, healthy human beings also capable of human life.

51 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-08-05 13:29 ID:oyLSyZCn

The world does revolve around Japan, that's why almost all giant monster attacks land on Tokyo and not on New York.

It really depends on you. You just don't become an otaku. You wake up one morning, and are just like "I'm an otaku." Something like that.

オタク (n) (col) geek; nerd; enthusiast

i think the most refferable thing about this word in your profile that even came UP is kamakazie girls...in which case, do you dress lolita? ((yes, boys can dress lolita, EGL has boy's clothing too)) have you read the book, manga AND seen the movie, better yet do you own them all? can you name at least 10 lolita fashion designers?
and there are PLENTY of otaku at that age, i myself was one, but i however have been watching anime since age 4 with a japanese animated version of the little mermaid...i believe what your reffering to are called adult swim junkies, which come in all ages im sorry to say, they people who go around having only ever seen wha'ts been on adult swim stating "omfg im suuuuuuuuuuuch an anime fan! i never miss a showing of anything on adult swim so i've seen flcl about 40 times cause adult swim is so great!(not) and repeated the same fucking 6 episodes 40 billion times!!!

In Japan, it is not much for the name of "Otaku".
Otaku have over 1000 comics.
Do you have any figure or charactor doll?
If you don't have, you are just 'Favorate'.
but if you have, you stand on the gate of "OTAKU".

I think Otaku is not bad person. prefer to they are relative good and pure person. And they also kind.
please search the word of "OTAKU" at youtube.
you will find Akihabara's Otaku Person. I guess they seems strange. but they are not bad guys.

But I never close to Otaku.(LOL)

69 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-12-19 09:39 ID:Heaven

I'm saved. Since I really don't like figures or character dolls, I will never buy one, and thus will never be an otaku.

Although I have on numerous occasions wondered if 1:1 silicone dolls will ever get good enough to have a realistic Nagato Yuki sitting in a chair in my house, I doubt the sentiment is enough and I would actually need to buy it to get there.

70 Name: 68 : 2007-12-19 11:18 ID:KvvXt1TT

>>69
I think you just love the charactor of Yuki-Nagato as real human.(If her existence is real, ofcource.)
She is surely cute but if you find nice girlfriend, you will
forget.

Otaku is the person who cannot love real girls or even has girlfriend, the priority is nearly equal charactor and real girlfriend.

In now step, you are not Otaku I think.
Don't worry.

71 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-12-20 13:00 ID:Heaven

Yuki is cute and reliable and probably does what she's told (I imagine a load of eromanga has already gone there) but I like to talk with my girls and she wouldn't be very good at conversation.

If we were debating over which SuzuHaru character is most worthy as a girlfriend, it would be Sasaki. Certainly Haruhi would be right out, because I wouldn't be fond of the universe being remade every time I pissed her off somehow. That's where Sasaki is a safe bet -- she could remake the universe, but she doesn't have the wild tendency to actually go off and do it. Yet because she still has all the same powers, this allows her to save me when necessary, so she may turn out to be as useful as Yuki.

I definitely have a tendency toward year-long infatuation with 2D characters, but every time so far it's been cured by a real person. Although every one of those times, the real person has been unavailable, breaking me out of obsessions was useful in itself and thus I write them into my history.

72 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-12-24 09:27 ID:8idolQps

Be warned-finding a girlfriend does not make you stop liking anime and manga.

My girlfriend and I both watch anime together a lot and will discuss and swap manga, though our interests vary. I like the comedy where she prefers more serious things.

73 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2007-12-25 18:53 ID:mwCqJ35F

The simple fact that you are sking if you are an otaku is a sign you arent.
For the most part otaku like to pretend they arent.

I win you fail.
And I didnt even have to go in depth I let ole >>63 do the talking for me.
Heres a clue. quit sucking adult swims coperate teet, download a bittorrent client, do some friggin research, hell go into an irc channel or five, Realise that the only reason you do this is to aleve some boredom that results from your utterly mediocre life and understand the only reason you focus so much on anime and not other aspects of life is because you wanna remain ignorant of whats going on in the news. Then You will be good.

You can still enjoy anime AND have a life ya collective fucktards.

And to think, I used to be such a nice guy.

Merry christmas

Don't consider yourself an otaku.
In reality otaku is a negative connotation. Personally, just be you and dont worry about what others label you as. Frankly, if you want advice from me, then take it as this:
You can have more than one intrest.
Look at me, I love anime. Yet, I am also in the army, enjoy skateboarding and surfing and have an avid intrest in meteorology.

So dont worry about what to call yourself and whether or not you are an otaku. Besides, Anime Junkie sounds alot better. It's like heroin only without the withdrawls.

Ok horrible joke.
Anywho, Bunnymee, that is actually epic in amount. I couldnt say i have 1000 manga. its more...300 or so in many boxes back in my home, plus 800 dollars in anime dvds 100 gigs filled on a dedicated computer plus an anime review blog/site in the works.

You know you're bad when you have a line on episodes that are being released down to the very day of release and watch it at that time -guiltily raises his hand-
Anywho, I hope you can use this bit of advice >>1

I call bullshit on this claim, as I just had a week with no opportunity to watch anime, and I felt really sick until I sat down and watched an entire series of something which wasn't even very good, just to get the fix.

I'd... say you're otaku. You seem like a big fan of manga. :)

While I'm at it, just thought I'd contribute my 2 cents to the whole 'otaku' discussion: Contrary to most perceptions of the meaning of the word (negative nuance), otaku is just like, you're a really huge fan of something. There's different kinds of otaku too. I guess the difference is the degree of your obsession - the way I see it, there's what I think of as typical otaku (whether just a big fan or obsessed), and there's 'super-obsessed-take-it-too-far-annoying otaku'... Anyway, from my understanding, and from what I hear from my (jp) friends, being otaku isn't a bad thing - though then again, it depends on what others think otaku is. Some peeps do think of it as a bad thing. I don't think it's bad, though. I may not have thousands of manga etc, but I do have quite a lot and consider myself an otaku.
