Alcoholism - ask questions, share experiences (22)

So I'm in my last week of stationary therapy and am going home soon. It was very helpful for me and even though I know that there will be some tough times ahead, I think I can make it and stay clean for the next few years. It's not my plan to have a relapse some time but one never knows. For now it's my plan to accomblish a lot in my new job (had to quit my studies before therapy because of alcohol) in the next few years and lead a much more active life and not just watch anime and browse boards. I've rediscovered some old hobbies of mine and that alone will help me a lot in fighting my addiction.

So I guess this is a thread to share experiences with alcoholism or any other addiction and to ask questions for people who think they might have a similar problem, know someone with an addiction or are simply interested in the subject.

Right, but years of drinking 1/2 - 1 bottle of vodka per day almost every day is another matter.

I'm interested in the subject,... Did you figure out the sequence of events in your daily routine that lead you to the drink? Have you sufficiently altered your habits to avoid that?

How do you plan to prevent loneliness to cause you to plunge again?

Do you intend to be a strict no-alcohol drinker, or just be moderate on your consumption?

You can do it, OP!

a serious question, do you think this AA shit about accepting a higher power and never drinking again are the best approach?

to me it sounds like bullshit having to admit defeat, that you can never be normal or just enjoy a nice drink like a normal person.

Total severence from alcohol is not connected to accepting an higher power,...

Some people are excessively sensitive to alcohol, and absolutely must avoid drinking even occasionnally, because their body just can't take it like most people.

That has nothing to do with admiting defeat, it's a physiological problem. A blind person won't see light, no matter how long she will not "admit defeat"

I'm an alcoholic, and I hate AA with a passion. I am by nature a very quiet person and an atheist to boot, so them bothering me constantly about god and trying to get me to give them my phone number annoys the shit out of me. The only problem is, when I don't go for a while, I relapse. :(

I believe there are non-sectarian alternatives for the AA.

Actually, alcohol, in any quantity, is harmful to your body. If you are going to quit it, quit it completely, because there is no real reason to drink alcohol.
