I always felt they both decided to go extra hard on the fame by pretending they wanted to control the narrative but really he wanted to be a famous celebrity and she wanted to drown out Kimye but it all backfired. However with that in mind, I do believe Taylor forms friendships and relationships solely with publicity in mind because that's always been her MO and I don't think Tom is smart or savvy enough to play that game despite his thirst and that's why he got screwed over in the end which is not what he signed up for.
