Can he still believe that all publicity is good publicity? I feel he is thinking "thank god I have Kong as any movie that people want to talk about will get me back in the public eye."

I rather think it is the other way around: Shit Island has gained more traction than it might because publications know that Hiddleswift means clicks and "what Tom thought about Hiddleswift" means even more clicks. (I am not saying that that made Tayto worth the collateral damage to his credibility.)
