There are MANY Chinese studying in Japan right now, more than ever. Japanese schools are very welcoming to foreigners because many of them have a hard time filling up on students with the declining population. There should be a very active body of foreign students from China, Korea, and elsewhere.

I don't think it's a problem so long as you're in a major city. The older generations may be more patriotic and racist but they are polite so they won't tell you in the face.

I suspect even being a "nice gaijin" wouldn't cut it, due to nonverbal social cues that are beyond your knowledge. For instance, maintaining prolonged eye contact generally makes a Japanese person uncomfortable; pouring soy sauce on your rice at a meal would be a blatant insult to the rice god; things like that. There are a huge number of ways you can offend somebody simply by not being familiar enough with the subtleties of their culture, especially when they want to be offended and to resent you.
True, I personally find I can't maintain eye contact with people for longer than a few seconds, so I wouldn't want to do that with anybody either. And most rice tastes better plain, besides soy-sauce breaks up the rice clumps so you can't even pick 'em up with your chopsticks afterwards.

I've read about the Japanese people, especially the children, being very impressionable when it comes to foreigners. For example, I've read the case in particular of a certain black wrestler who has become quite famous there and as such people there see all black foreigners as him.
Any truth in this? What about Hispanic peoples in Japan? I imagine there aren't that many so I speculate that they have no opinion on them. However, their view on Hispanics might be shaped by their view on the Brazilian-Japanese and others from South America that are returning back to Japan.

Probably not. Racism against black people in the US is very culturally ingrained. There's a deep societal rift that has yet to heal there. Black people in Japan are maybe a little exotic, but not much more than other gaijin, and the same stereotypes apply in most cases. You'd be a gaijin first and a black person second, which might be a big advantage.
