It's a mixed bag.
In some respects, people who say this often get along fine just being themselves in a way that doesn't work for the advisee.
In other respects, it isn't good to act like someone you aren't usually just to impress, say, a date. Because best case it's detectably false and you'll be asked to fuck of, worst case it's false advertising and that's not a good foundation for your personal relationships.
