There are lots of things that only exist in the diffuse space of social convention: family, religion, money, nation-states, how to properly use a toilet, any relationship to power including capital, the government, your parents and your teacher and yeah, gender. Many of these are ill-defined in some aspect, if you ask three different people why should we obey our parents you'll probably get three different answers. They exist in this paradoxical nature of not actually existing (i.e. spooks) but still very much influencing every aspect of the social order.

I don't think that realization by itself is very interesting as anything else except as a starting point though
