A mix of desertification and "climate change" although it looks like a result of said desertification has made it too hot for herding, the herders who lived directly below the Sahara desert in the Sahel or semi-arid areas have moved their animals into countries like Ghana and Nigeria where they have conflict over land use (particularly feeding the cows crops), religion, and tribal identity. Ghana and some other countries instituted a shoot on sight policy for the herdsmen whereas Nigeria did not and even is attempting to legislate areas where they can graze freely despite the security issue the herdsmen caused, mostly because their president belongs to the same ethnic group usually implicated.

Basically, herding destroys the enviroment and causes conflict with settled people.
