Wakizashi, I can understand, because they have pointy tips, they look cool, they're compact.
Tanto, well... they're a super-simplified, purely sharp version of wakizashi script. OK, that's useful.
But katana?
You see, the only purpose of katana is to save face. Without them, any gaijin looking over your shoulder could immediately see that you don't have "beer" or "waifu" and start laughing at you. But with katana, now you can just pretend that a better life is impossible! "It's not me, it's the sword system!"
