[trap?]Gender-swapping online[reverse trap?] (75)

First, I apologize if this would fit better in another area, but I can't really find a good fit for it anywhere.

How many of you have, at some point, mis-represented yourself online as being the opposite gender as what you really are? What reasons did you have for doing so? How long have/did you maintain the charade? Did it lead to any odd/uncomfortable situations?

I've never actually done this myself, and I'm not really sure why I'm asking. Idle curiousity, I suppose. Especially since traps/reverse traps seem to be the new hotness these days.

Me too. Every time we get a new game they know I'm going to pick the loli. The reason I don't play MMORPG's like WoW is mostly because there are no cute girls to play as lol

My brother of 14 pretended to be a girl of 17 in a chatroom,He actually found a "victim" to chat with and 2 weeks later he found out that that man was actually a girl of 15.

I pretended to be a guy on the internet once to see how easy it was to fool other bitches.

I had three IRC girlfriends in like a week.

I'm a female-to-male transsexual so I 'misrepresent' my gender as being a normal guy all the time. It's what I do in real life as well, but no one really cares or has a problem.

32 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-01 16:30 ID:qP1CN/dD

In games, I play as girls all the time - they usually have the more amusing storylines.

Online, I don't bother. BUT, I just, as a general rule, assume all people on the internet are men. Got nothin against women, but as a guy, when having a conversation, it's just easier to assume that.

I find it interesting that when people hear about a FtoM transsexual they are considered a tomboy++ or lesbian, but a MtoF transsexual is instantly just a pervert.

I usually play girl characters in video games, despite being male. I don't try to trick people into think I'm one, and I usually mention that I'm a boy if I feel there's a need to. I don't always use girl characters either, but most of the time I prefer using girls because they're usually cuter.

I do this because, if I'm going to be staring at my character while I play a game, I might as well use someone aesthetic and (by preference) cute. Also, I noticed how I really enjoy collecting equipment and dressing my character up, so maybe I had a lonely childhood and am now acting that out by treating my characters as dress-up dolls. so ronery orz

One funny thing I found is that I'm treated way nicer than usual when people assume I'm a girl. I don't take advantage of this, but I've witnessed other people do so. (So yeah, whether it's true or not, follow the NO GIRLS ON THE INTERNET rule and make things easier for yourself.)

I often do that in online games, just to have some fun.

I sometimes pretend I'm a girl in online games, because people instantaneously want to group me or give me stuff.

39 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-04 02:45 ID:Heaven

i don't play online games much, but i use gender-neutral names on irc and things and people often assume i'm a girl... and if anyone asks if i'm a girl or not, i just tell them it doesn't matter because i'm definitely not going to have sex with anyone from the internet.

Same here. Sometimes it gets irritating. The only thing people care is the sex of the person they are speaking to. Jesus, why do they care so much!

Depends on your motivation.

43 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-09 21:22 ID:5bbLQQL/

I let people assume I'm male. It's interesting to see how people change their attitudes towards you find they find out your true gender.

44 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-10 00:16 ID:CAOpmWQy

I almost always play/roleplay female characters and come across in some ways as "girly", but I never claim to be a girl, just a guy who likes cute things, which is hardly uncommon on the internet. If I don't make it clear, though, I get taken for every combination of male/female straight/gay in pretty much equal shares... I guess that's what happens you spout as much facetious nonsense as I do (and don't have a mic).

45 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-11 17:43 ID:NeDZv69R

I never really state if I'm male or female. I just let the people assume what I am.

There was a program that took a sample of your writing and determined whether you were male or female, and I always fell towards the female side. Not sure if that means people think I'm a girl.

I really don't play MMO's too much (they're so fucking boring), so that not really an issue.

It also depends on which persona I'm using. I have like four or five different online personas, and they are all completely different. 2 are obviously male, 1 is questionable, another can be considered female. Each one is assoiated with a different user name, though sometimes its still hard to keep them all seperate.

46 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-11 18:19 ID:z+DKYKNk

Since I've been online. I remained "genderless", but was automatically placed in "male" because of the sites I went to. When registering for a membership at a forum. I'd stick to my username I made when I was 12. It's not that I'm impressionating to be male. People don't normally ask for you gender or anything. They just assume you're of the male gender.

Though sometimes, I feel like its necessary to state my sex sometimes because others call to me as "bro" or "son" when in fact I'm not... only when they start using terms of endearment meant for the male gender- I start to speak up. Most of the time, I don't even care though. It's not like they live up the street from me or anything. It works best to be genderless.

47 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-24 02:28 ID:Aqu/CK1h

I'm an 18 yr old girl. My character is a girl. And yet I always get asked if I'm a guy. Apparently I don't talk like KaWaii~!, and I'm kind of sharp and blunt with my words, so they always think I'm a really old guy. I don't deny it because it annoys me when guys change their attitude towards me as if I'm a prospective gf.

48 Name: Anonymous : 2009-05-26 19:17 ID:kio7RSuo

I'm a girl, and I tend to play guys in online games. In real life, I'm pretty androgynous. Genders just aren't that important to me. If someone thinks I'm a guy, I tend to take it as a compliment.

> and I'm kind of sharp and blunt with my words, so they always think I'm a really old guy.

Are you sure that is not what you think of what they think of you? Because that is what I think you think others think of you and you're fooling yourself because that is not the impression you give because people don't have to visualize you in their minds based of the way you talk, whether it is blunt or it could be considered blunt.

Others don't change their attitude just because they think you're a future gf, but because they want to talk to girls/women to gain confidence when talking to RL girls and women. They "test" you, trying to find which thigns you like, which you find funny, et cetera, only to put together an eschewed opinion of women. That is something I just came up with. It's probably not true. I shouldn't be coming up with things on the internet, SHOULD I?

Personally I don't like to think of what others think because I've realized after meta there's only repetition: 4 cubes rotating after 4 daytimes, imaginary cubed earth has 4 days within simultaneous rotation indicating what you think of others thinking of you is simply 1- 24 hour rotation of 4 quadrant created earth.

I'd have to disagree with you a bit there.
Firstly, I guess I forgot to mention that the type of game that I play is geared towards prepubescent-mid adolescents. So yes, they do accuse me of being a "46 yr old man" just because I speak coherently and with no frills.

Secondly, even if they weren't immature kids, people do still make judgements on you based on the way you express yourself on the internet. I'm sure you're guilty of it yourself before. if i wer too suddenley start tiping lyk dis, or start talkin' like bitch yo', you would immediately make assumptions about me, my age, my gender, my education etc.

Thirdly, there are many desperate/horny guys on the internet, that will do anything for you if they know you're available. Whether they are genuine or "testing" is irrelevant. Either way, they still change their attitude towards you.

Finally, don't get me wrong, I'd be the last person on the internet worrying about what other people thought of me. I said that I'd rather play the game, and "be one of the guys", than to have "special treatment" just cos I'm a girl.

Heh, you are right. The internet is so creepy.

53 Name: Anonymous : 2009-07-09 00:24 ID:s1hRXo5r

I just try to be gender neutral. No one ever asks my gender, they just assume I'm male, and I won't tell them otherwise. I used to list myself as female on my profiles, but after a couple REALLY creepy guys started contacting me I just decided to become an internet androgyne.

I like it better that way. I feel that when people think I'm a man, I might not get as much free stuff, but I get a little more respect.

1) I was made fun of everyday in middle school. I didn’t want to face insults from the internet. If someone made fun of me online, it feels like their making fun of someone else who’s not me.
2) I have trouble fitting in with my own gender. I usually talk to other people of my own gender online. I don’t want them to think I’m weird.
3) I never had a friend before. I want a friend the same gender as me. If I am the opp. gender, it is easier to get people of my own gender to talk to me.
4) I never liked myself. If I create someone diff. online, I hate myself less this way.
I started internet 4 years ago. I am doing it for 4 years. First 3 months I was my true gender. Then switched.
I’m straight by the way. No, I will not have transgender.
-someone fell in love with me; told them my real gender
-someone ask for my real name; declined to tell them

What is this form of Transgender called, I would be extremely interested in reading about this as I have had thoughts in the past similar to that about my own motives for cross playing and I am studying psychology anyway.

58 Name: Anonymous : 2009-08-20 00:08 ID:2MQ1XvZ9

I'm a guy and have posed as a girl in some choice places, particularly Omegle when I get someone annoying or in other anonymous chats. Even though it's more of a joke, I will admit that I have taken much pleasure from these acts and have seriously considered becoming a transvestite and crossdressing as a hobby. The furthest extent I've done so far is dressing up in a makeshift sailor fuku with a legit skirt and a pink long-haired wig and doing the Hare Hare Yukai dance in front of ~300 people, but I kind of want to do more.

So my point is, maybe doing sex switches online could affect your perception of them irl and maybe make you more inclined to actually do it offline as well.

^^;

Also, interesting thought: I wonder how many people are lying about their gender in this thread.

59 Name: Anonymous : 2009-09-05 20:19 ID:D5RW49Ts

I'm a guy, but...that's just my body. I'm transgender and well, i'm not sure if many of you'd understand but i'm a girl trapped in a boy's body. So of course i'm going to pose as a girl, because that's what I really am...bodies don't say anything, it's about the inside.

never done this myself and see no reason to.
never seen girls posing as guys doing it annoyingly, but a lot of times its guys posing as girls and they are annoying.

they talk like this desu desu~~ ^_^ and what not and they usually use voice modulators and other audio techniques to make themselves sound girly.

to me it is damn obvious looking at the way they talk, their mic, their profile, etc. I sure hope other people are able to tell...

as with girls most of them are either neutral (dont tell/no mic), regular (tell/mic), or take advantage (let everyone know/constant mic)

on one of my games in a match, there was this girl on my team and the three other people were all trying to hit her up on snapchat and whatnot.

if its one thing that hasnt changed with time its the desperation.
i feel this will only get worse with the advancement of technology. you already see people creating virtual characters and what not; playing as a virtual "kawaii~~" anime girl.

with the virtual characters i feel isnt good for your health. i feel it causes a disconnect between what you want to be and who you really are in life...

If you don't create a cute character you must have something wrong with you. Cuteness is justice. All men and all women should have cute characters.

yeah, make everyone have a cute character and look generic.
besides just because you have a cute character doesnt make you cutsy in real life.

even if something stupid like that happened where i would have to use some lame ass "kawaii character" of me where i play my games it still would end up being very dissassociated with everything else.

sounds like someone insecure about cuteness being justice. they will accept one day to be proud of cute characters and that it should be cute because its cute, no gender/sexual feelings needed. it's just how the world should be, same reason why yuri is justice. you dont need to want to be a girl, gay, or attracted to women to accept that yuri is justice. cuteness is the ideal future.

There is nothing gay about accepting cuteness as justice. In fact I encourage being a very strong and masculine man to attract and surround yourself with cuteness. They will be even more cute in contrast to your strong and stoic self.
