Imageboards don't scale well. Any imageboard the size of 4chan would be almost impossible to moderate effectively. If it wasn't for the owner's incompetance, most of 4chan's problems came from the size of its userbase and how overexposed it was to the rest of the internet. This probably why regular forums also died. They too don't scale well. Social media is successful because it can absorb millions of users and keep them under some level of automated control at the expense of retarding and atomizing them.
