I read the first volume of the manga, and it was... amusing, I guess, but that was about it. I only laughed out loud at one joke (the kappa one), but the rest was just average.
Does it get any better, or is it just mildly overrated?
I would say to try the anime. I found it funnier than the manga, although I did enjoy that too.
god school rumble is so funny, i really like miko chan and yakumo. temna is so funny and so is harima since he always tries to impress temna. kappa guy (tamna's crush) is so bizzare and ichijou is funny as well since his so flirty around girls espcially D size cups xD! god cant wait till season 2 finishes!
uwaahh~ school rumble's character development is beyond amazing! saw the battle royale parody both in the anime and read it in the manga....Mikoooo-chan!! Hanai!! Ichijou's cool too, but why's she striving to be feminine?? She's already outstanding and overpowering with her strength and all~
Finally got to see Season 2 up to episode 3. It started out slow but the combat game was absolutely brilliant. So many great little character moments and cliche parodies, and it weaved together all the different plot threads beautifully.
season 2 is up to ep22 now i think!~ ep 20 and 21 are sooo random~

I'm in the middle of season 2 and as much as i love it, i do hope it has a more "end" than season one..even more so since i cant just go watch season 3...because it doesnt exist as far as i know.

no, not at all i do like some changes. But a lot of the time the changes just f-it up in my opinion. I like love hina, but the manga is so much better...and it actually ends. Thats the only example i can think of right now, but i have yet to see major changes to an anime from manga that is good. That could be just me of course.
Kare Kano, Cromartie, at least some parts on NHK, off the top of my head. This is of course not counting the many cases of manga based on anime, where the manga is usually significantly worse.
