Who's your favorite anime character, and why? (212)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-12-14 15:08 ID:QTh3ugA/ This thread was merged from the former /anime/ board. You can view the archive here.

I'm actually not really interested in who your favorite character is, but rather on the reasons that make you like him/her/it so much. So please don't just leave a name, but list the main reasons that motivate your choice (nice looks, cool powers, interesting personnality, lifestory, etc).

If you are hard pressed to chose an all time favorite, you can also cite some of your favorites.

So, to kick off this thread, here's my favorite character:

Reki, from Haibane Renmei: I like her looks, the multiple layers of her personality, and how these layers show up in details of her everyday behavior, making her more "real" (for instance, the fact that she's a smoking teenager). I also related well to her inner struggles, and enjoyed the way her conflict was brought to a closure.

Haruka Tenou (Sailor Uranus) from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. She has the perfect balance of a feminine and masculine personality, topped with the ability to make any girl faint with a smile. She's strong, and doesn't need to rely on anyone, except perhaps Michiru. Megumi Ogata's voice just makes her even more attractive, causing her to be the single coolest female in any anime.

I agree with OP's choice.

4 Name: OPieceman : 2007-12-15 01:53 ID:pLzhYTPN

Luffy from One Piece because of his strength , personality, and his determanation to follow his dreams. He trys very hard to show people and to actually follow his dreams unlike people who say something and then never do it.Also many other pirate captains look at their crew mates as only mere dolls but Luffy sees his crew as his best friends making him different then most captains and values them with his life.

Rekki is a fine choice. I tend to 'fall' for tsundere characters and it could be said that she is one. However, her character is rather more believable than many tsundere, insofar as her personality is not as outlandish along either dimension.

Yomiko Readman (ROD) is cute and has a disposition of indominable optimism that cheers me up but is somewhat south of many other cutsey/sugary/how much coffee has she had characters who are similarly so. Like Rekki, I also like that Yomiko is far from perfect at everything and that she has a more normal body than some cookiecutter anime girls (aside from enormous breasts in ROD:TV).

The Count in The Count of Monte Cristo, because his voice acting in both sub and dub is superb and because his grim determination and charm makes him a great antihero. I loved all the time he was on the screen. A worthwhile update to Dumas' great work.

The cast of Hellsing. Just find them likeable in general. Style, attitude, and power that appeals very strongly to the teenage boy inside me.

Sarcastic girls like Rei from Pani Poni Dash, Yomi from Azumanga Daioh, Nenene from ROD, etc. It's only 1 dimension but I find them very amusing.

Many others. Anime has a tendency to have fun characters, so I imagine this is a very diverse field. I'm interested to see who the rest of the community likes, as well as the general favorites here on a text board vs % of pictures put up on an image board.

I jump around a lot. At the moment, I'd say Tsuyuri from Doujin Work. Deadpan, sadistic, manipulative, delicious. The misconceptions she spreads are the most entertaining part of the series. Also, bloomer-themed rape doujins.

Lelouch (Code Geass). Unlike cardboard cutout shounen protagonists who have moral struggles, Lelouch is the epitome of the anti-hero; foregoing the consequences for what he believes is right.

Onizuka (GTO) gets my vote as well. Uses whatever methods he likes in order to execute good deeds.

Jin from Samurai Champloo.

I like him a lot because he stick to his personal codes and principles and will never ever compromise those beliefs for other reasons. Also, he happen to be one of the badass swordsman in anime so it's always pleasure to watch him fighting other fools.

Guts from Berserk: He represents everything that can go wrong in life. No Parents, raped young, betrayed by his best friend, etc etc.. and the sad thing is he can't escape his fate no matter what he does..yet he keeps fighting.

Vicious from Cowboy Bebop: he is cold, brutal and he believes in nothing...yet once he did. He believed in his friends,Julia,Spike and they betrayed him by leaving..ditching him which destroyed lil' faith Vicious had in life. "You were the one leaving people out the loop"(to spike)..

Ryu from Shamo(manga): Killed both parents because they kept pushing him in his studies. send to juvi/jail where he was raped and where he started training, learning martial arts from an old convicted sensei. We finally see THAT bad guy you always see in kung fu movies doing bad sh1t..from raping to killing.

Hanma Yujiro from Baki the grappler

Kuroro Lucifer from Hunter X Hunter

etc etc etc

Interesting,... You seem to like well built bad guys who seem to have a reasonable reason to act in wrong ways.

I would totally agree, nothing spoils more the scenario than a superficial and unbelieavable bad guy. A painfull example is the guild's boss in Last Exile. There is never a shred of explanation about why she behaves the way she does (and often what she does makes no sense at all).

Lain.

I fell in love with her when I was 11. I saw an ad about S.E.L. in a ToyFare (fuck you McFarlane) magazine. My connection was only 56k at the time, so that means I waited a week or two, in between watching it and searching Direct Connect hubs, to see the whole thing. Since I couldn't wait for the downloads to finish, I searched the entire script online - so I knew the story before I saw it.

I related to her even in the ad; that far away look, of her being pushed against a fence, and clutching at it almost carelessly, that she was standing in the wind on top of a large building... It was primarily her indifference to the environment that I loved at first. She could be dressed in anything and still seem as if her appearance was not at all important, as if her reason for adopting a fashionable superfluousness was out of plain curiosity. That brings me to another point - I was completely caught up in a 'cyberpunk' phase, staying up long nights to code, dismissing all the world in my selfishness, listening to obscure rock, and generally forgetting what existed outside my fantasies and programs. The genius of Lain's character is that everything she says and does fits perfectly how she looks. "Who am I? I am me." I felt like her and I weren't anything but code and circuitry adorned with flesh, she was all lack of ego, yet completely purposeful in her existence.

7 years later, I still feel the same exact way about her.

Scar from FMA
he really isn't your generic anti-villain/hero, and i actually felt sympathy for him. He did have his flaws such as his religiouse zeal coupled with the hypocrisy of using alchemy to kill alchemist because he thought alchemy was evil, but those flaws made him seem more human as if he wasn't just some anti-hero or villain who was just cooked up to fill the role.
I also liked how he also displayed very little arrogance, fully aware of his own limits and that despite the fact that he viewed the deaths of alchemists as justified he was fully aware that he was still a sinner.

My favorite is Rio. She was born to advertise Japanese slot machine, called Pachi-Slo, the model named "Super Black Jack".

She has pretty cute boob that seems so yammy, sweetly shaped waist, hip like a bud of a cherry blossam, and most important, pink-colored short hair. She is "a cluster" of ideal, at least for me. She was made to be so, as she is a means of commerce.

Those two factors, nice body and "beautiful" background of the birth, explain the reason why I love Rio. She is just a puppet of money-eater, and has perfect body. In addition to that, thanks for cheap character-making, she is given a perfect personality. She can be true love of mine because all I know is that she is gramarous, she is a not-so-good dealer, her machine rarely gives me coins, and something like that.

If I were killed by tons of coins disgorged from her machine, there is nothing to say anymore.

I tend to have a favourite character in every series I read so it's difficult to define just one character which I love above all the other characters. Generally, in guys I like the vulnerable characters and in girls I like tsundere character types.
I guess I'll give a few of mine from different series I have read recently:
Hikaru from ouran high school - I like his insecurities and his jealousy over haruhi. As a fangirl, Hikaru appeals to me greatly because he is in a real struggle over whether to help Tamaki and Haruhi out and whether to be selfish and let it go on without Tamaki realising. The fact that at the moment he seems to be on the verge of sacrificing his own feelings for the sake of Haruhi is something that I really love about him at the moment. Plus he is the character who has developed the most through the series, so I have grown to like him alot.

Madarame from Genshiken - I liked him from the start of the series, but he became my favourite after he began to develop a crush on one of the other characters, because it was an unrequited thing and the expressions he showed and how he acted kind of won me over. He's an unusual favourite, I admit, but he's so awesome I can't help but like him.

Ryuuji and Taiga from Tora dora - unusually, both the main characters have similar personalities to those which I prefer in main characters. Taiga has to be tsundere. If she isn't, I'll jump off a cliff for getting it so wrong. Ryuuji has an appearance that makes him look like a delinquent but he has actually a gentle personality. They both fit my ideals for characters.

Kagami and Konata from Lucky star - aside from really liking them as individual characters, I really like them as a duo, where Konata says a comment, Kagami corrects it or tells her off and then Konata makes a gag out of it.

I could go on but I won't. And if these characters seem random, it's because I just looked at the last four things I had watched.

I felt kinda like him in the begining of Genshiken never dated, hiding the fact that his an otaku, kinda shy and outspoken, and I even just started college at the time i first watched Genshiken. The only difference i saw was the fact that i really didn't like doujinshi or hentai games.

I like Alucard just because completely slaughtering an entire SWAT squad in a hotel is pretty badass.
