What do you think of Indians? (73)

Hi. This might seem like an unusual request. I am from India, and I am going to US for studies from this fall. I haven't met many Americans in person, so this is going to be my first exposure to the US. I am quite sure that the majority of posters in 4ch are americans, hence, I would like to ask you a question-
What do you think of Indians as people? What do you think of them when you speak to them? What kind of an impression does an average Indian's personality create on you?
Please be straightforward. Even if you insult me and Indians, I wouldn't really give a damn, as I don't know anything about you.
Other nationalities can also give their opinions. I am also interested to know what anyone thinks of us.

They're fine by me. I had lots of Indians at my school (well, that and Indian Americans), and they're all nice for the most part.
No issue.

Although I should know better, having dealt with all races of people, I've developed more of a prejudice towards Indians than other ethnic groups.
It seems after only a few encounters, a trend towards Indians being unwilling to trust others or being untrustworthy themselves comes out. Either they think you're going to rip them off or they're trying to bite off more than their fair share.
Because of this I'm very cautious around Indians and will avoid any business transactions with Indians.
It's like getting a small electric shock everytime you touch a certain object, eventually you hesitate or avoid touching it.

4 Name: Anonymous : 2009-06-21 02:31 ID:7uSoGcD+

I don't have too many Indians around my area, but there are a few, and for the most part they're really really nice. I haven't dealt with them as an ethnic group enough to deal with trust issues though.
There's like, 1 or 2 regular Indian customers that are too cheap for my tastes as a cashier at the farmer's market (Always asking for bargains and freebies >_>), but I know they don't represent the group as a whole.

I met a couple of Indians in the past. One Indian guy came to my high school as a transfer student. He was kool but we never hang out. We do say wassup when he sees me but months passed and we don't say hi anymore.

What I think about Indians? Nothing, really. I think of them as any other human being because we're all humans right? It's just that you guys have a totally different culture which is interesting.

I saw Dhoom and Dhoom 2, I really like those films and the music is pretty kool.

Haggling is culturally ingrained in many poor regions. If you do not haggle you come across as stupid and gullible. It's more of a social habit then a selfish desire to get things cheaper then everyone else.

I guess us Indians come across as cheap. I agree too that a lot of us are really cheap. Its probably because the day to day amenities and stuff is quite cheaper in India compared to other places. The cost of living index here is around Rs. 20-25000($400-500) a month for a well to do family. So when they go overseas its a hassle to spend much more, I guess. I know because I've lived in places like Thailand and Kuwait for a few years.
About bargaining, if you live in India you will understand lol. Shopping in India in many places involves going from shop to shop, and there aren't malls everywhere, other than the bigger cities. There is no fixed price at those shops. The sales people always try to sell stuff at a higher price than they should, and as an opposite reaction the customers bargain. Its sort of s skill here. Its not like that in the malls though. I guess growing up shopping like that sort of ingrains bargaining in your mind.

i've met alot of great indian people and some of them are good friends, but i've also met a significant number who don't seem socially 'in tune' with the people around them.

they'll just ramble on and on or talk about something totally out of point that no one in the conversation is interested in.

i have several indian friends and can say without a doubt that you will do just fine in america. The worst you will encounter are rednecks who will tell you to go back to your 7/11 or ignoramus' that will think your a terrorist but nothing serious will come of either. Don't sweat it man, we're a nation of immigrants afterall and most people will accept you (i assume you aren't a psycho who tortures animals or anything like that lol)

I'm in Europe. I know of a lot of Indians. Indians come in all shapes and sizes. Impossible to generalize over a billion people, except that they like cricket and eating (barely joking).

All in all, most of the first generation Indian immigrants I know are pretty outgoing characters, but that's normal among first generation immigrants.

Sorry, but can't be very helpful, every time I think of something about Indians, I remember a counter example. In any case, don't fret too much about acceptance. Most people won't give a damn about where you come from, in a positive and negative sense.

Do you eat curry or live with someone who eats curry? If so, then the smell will leave reactions with those you meet, even though they won't say anything about it. I've met two Indians who didn't smell like curry, though, so it might just be a silly stereotype.

I completely understand that it's considered culturally acceptable, it just bothered me a bit when they kept trying to go lower. But we could alternately call that determination!
And these days because of the economy, I understand why more people are haggling now than ever.
I didn't grow up with that sort of thing (And I'm too shy and panicky to talk more than I need to at a store), so maybe that's why it's different to me.

I think you'll be fine in the end. I hope you enjoy yourself in the US =)

I'm not born or residing in America. I think nothing about Indians that I don't about any human. Complete elimination of the racism problem by realizing the unimportance of external characteristic details, for their occurance tells nothing about ones character.

Alot of my local American friends have trouble understanding non local accents (sometimes even for Americans from other parts of the country) especially when people talk quickly. There aren't any trilled 'R's in American english, so being careful of those might help a little. I heard from some students at the university that watching American television shows and copying the pronounciation can help. (Especially The West Wing, apparently. I don't have a TV anymore so I can't really recommend anything myself.)

My best school friend was from New Delhi and I couldn't really understand anything he said for a couple years after we started competing in class. But we became friends after six years or so and are still friends since. We had a lot of good times being involved in Student Activities (clubs and student organizations) together and doing volunteer tutoring (we were both good math students) at our university.

since nobody mentioned this, i feel like i should say... it's never good to lump people together due to race/ nationality/ etc, because people are individuals so you can't really judge like that...

BUT

i live in a university town with a large international population, and encounter people from all walks of life... and a common complaint about indian men is... armpit odour :(.

there is nothing sadder than having some sexy indian med students or some such sit next to you in the theatre, and you are intially thinking how cute one of them is, then you are overcome by unpleasant body odour :(

so my only advice is- take on the hygeine habits of the locals and please use anti-prespirant and shower daily?

I'm a second generation Indian born and raised in the US. The high school I went to was in an area with a lot of Asians, but I was the only Indian in my college. Either way, my nationality didn't really make much of a difference; it's very relaxed, especially on the east coast, when it comes to nationality. People occasionally ask if I can give them recipes for Indian food, though. Protip: Look them up online.

Also, work on that accent. It's fine if you have one, but it's hard to take an Indian accent seriously.

22 Name: Anonymous : 2009-06-29 18:00 ID:s0meoXyN

I live in an upper middle-class suburban area here in the U.S... SUV's, yuppie soccer moms, huge 2 1/2 story houses, lots of private schools, Starbucks, etc. Recently, a lot of Indian doctors, lawyers, business owners, and engineers have been coming into the area- in fact, my subdivision is essentially Little India with tons of wonderful Indian families coming in and really cleaning the place up (it's pretty awesome).

However, everyone around here fucking HATES all the Indians around here and see them as dirty, smelly, illegal immigrants who are lazy and stupid... even though the local high school's Valedictorian this year was a Punjabi kid, all of the Indians around here are resident aliens or naturalized citizens, all speak perfect English, many are converts to Christianity, and all take care of their lawns and bring a lot of good money into the area... It's absolutely ridiculous, because I'm in an area where it's not a bunch of redneck white trash Republicans and Jesus freaks, but rather cosmopolitan, well-off, professional people (and the Indians are just like that as well). It's pissing me the fuck off.

I think it depends on which part of America you are coming to. I am from New York City and over here I really don't think you will be treated that differently. I mean seeing as English is not your first language, you will have an accent but that doesn't really matter. Also, Indians are usually a lot smarter and more productive, which you will be apreciated and recognized for. The only bad experience I have had with Indians is that sometimes due to all the spices in your food, you guys smell really bad. As long as you are hygenic and bathe regularly you should be fine.

I don't have a problem with Indians as a whole. I really like that they are a peaceful and religious people. And the culture, the arts and the music, which has its origins in ancient civilization, are very interesting and unique. So my aim here is not to be insulting but just critically honest. It's like what Indian comedian Russell Peters said about Arab immigrants, that they were the "rednecks of the Arab world" (watch his videos on YouTube and you'll understand). Perhaps they find it difficult to adjust or assimilate into Western society or maybe they plainly don't want to. Since I have not had the opportunity to meet every kind of Indian, only the ones that immigrate to my country, then that is the only impression I have to go by.

The area where I live in Sydney, Australia is very multicultural and there are quite a few Indians living in my building. They are generally very quiet and polite people and very courteous when I encounter them in the elevator. However, there is a small Indian family living in the unit next to mine whose child screams incessantly at the most ungodly hours, while her parents merely scream back at her. I've never heard that child laugh- I often wonder, "Are they torturing the kid?" I don't know, maybe that's how they prefer to discipline their child, but it still disturbs me.

I read somewhere that the average age of Indians that lose their virginity is about 21 or 22 years old, although I can't remember the exact number. The reason I am mentioning this is because I also have this impression that young Indians, particularly males, are sexually repressed. My younger sister used to work in an adult store (a place that sells porn, in case you were wondering) and the store below them was an Indian restaurant. The Indian boy who worked there would always come up and annoy her, saying things like, "I need to have sex, my balls are going to explode, can I have sex with you?" To which my sister would calmly reply, "You are welcome to buy any of the adult DVDs we have."

As I said before, I can only go by my own personal experiences, and others may be similar or different, but I am probably more accustomed to Indians than others since they actually live near me.

41, the Indian he is talking about is from India. NOT Native Americans. Smmfh.
All the Indians I encounter are very kind. They either own hotels or convenience stores. The ones I went to school with were usually very scholarly, but I never personally had them as friends. I even had a crush on one Indian boy, who never payed me any mind but I adored his artwork. He answered anything about India, if you asked him kindly enough. Both his parents were straight from India, and he only came about three years ago. I loved how he had trouble pronouncing the letter V. Most of his V sounds were W. However, I wouldn't consider us friends. Just acquaintances. I just have one tip, don't completely assimilate to America's "standards". He often times would do stereotypical "Indian" things and tell self deprecating jokes to entertain our classmates. It upset me when classmates were trying to coerce him into trying a beef burger from the 'best joint in town' (which it was). They just couldn't understand and appreciate his culture and that he didn't eat cow! I'll never know if he ate it or not, but least to say, I was no longer attracted. Stay you! No matter what. Come here to be educated, not made into a fool!

I would say they are quite hard working, flexible and determined people.....as far as spices are concerned, I don't see a problem with that, its their culture and food and they bathe very regularly...check out your statsstics, in fact people who eat more of non-veg are more prone to smell badly than them ...I have soem great experiences with indians, I felt they were quite Intelligent and knowledable and not to miss, I also in next 20 years,India will be a new country altogether so watch man and be careful ....

well maybe theres an explenation why other people find us smelly. I dont think its the spice, that is down right stupid.lol i guess indians naturally, genetically produce stronger ordour despite bathing as much ( or a lot more ) than non-indian people.

iv conversed with indians from india a few times before and they come accross as robotic...i dont know how to explain it; its almost as if they cannot accept anything that is out of the ordinary, not wanting to open up to new things. they seem like the sort of people who judge unfortunately...

but it gets me down knowing this is how other people see indians coz im indians and i dont smell ( i think ;),im clean, i pronounce W and V perfectly, i'm very open, generous, im not overly religious, honest and keep my word ( usually :D)

so i guess that just means there a many kinda of indian people. like there r many kinds of caucasians and orientals and so on

I have lived around many Indian people for 8 years. 1.)They stare...a lot. 2.)They smell so bad of curry I avoid them. 3.)The curry they cook with stinks through our apartment walls. 4.)They drive poorly, once even hitting my truck while it was parked. On a nice summer day. 5.)They are very sensitive and offended by most things. 6.)They do not try to participate in any American holiday traditions and give hateful looks to me when I decorate for holidays. 7.)They have parties every week and cook horrible smelling curry the smell last for days. 8.)They do not watch their kids, and are way too trusting to let them play outdoors way into the evening hours alone. 9.)The men think they are superior to women. and 10.)They pretend not to understand English when many of them do. If they are so worried about being Americanized why dont they just stay home and cook with curry there.

see indians are good intelligent people, but yes i do agree with many things on here, they're very untrustworthy of everybody and only trust themselves, they're a bit selfish... as being selfish is normalized in their culture. they like to outsmart people and play tricks on people. indians will pretend that they're your friends and smile to your face but talk trash behind your back.

also many indians are very obsessed with white people. they pretend that they're white, they only want to hang around mix with and date/marry white people especially the dark ugly indians or indians living abroad in USA,canada,Europe,Austraila.

and for ignorant Americans, Indians are not Arabs! Arabs are basically caucasian/white people even if they have brown skin or a tan, Arabs are not a race, most arabs are half white half black! so please do not compare Arabs and indians in the same category,

>>50 Arabs are a great example of how race is a hazy and really vague concept. I know Arabs who are basically white and Arabs who are quite black (north Sudanese and some other north Africans.) I'm Arab on one side, but I look extremely white.

It's too bad I missed this thread by three years, because I have something relevant to contribute. I dated an Indian girl in college. She grew up in the US, so culturally she was an American basically, but her family was Brahmin and very traditional. I can't say I got an impression of Indian culture that well from her, being an American as she was, but I did meet her parents and spend some time around them. They were a little bit Anglophile and had an upper-class background, but nice people all the same.

I've never worked with Indians, so I don't know what they're like culturally. I imagine not too different from other people.

53 Name: Anonymous : 2012-03-23 08:03 ID:Yhtbx4jV

I think the Indians are very diverse people. Some Indian people are extremely efficient and intelligent, and others are extremely daft and lazy. Some are very nice, and others can be too much to tolerate. They (particularly the Indians from India) can be nosy, loud, cheap, selfish, dependent, irresponsible, untrustworthy, persistent, disrespectful, etc., etc., etc.

Somehow many of them rudely interrupt other people in conversations and go on and on about irrelevant things. They don't let other people say a word. They don't wait for their turns in anything. They are so eager to get things done that they crowd people in places like bank counters. They have no concept of privacy or personal space or turn taking or anything, and they shove their stuff to the counter from the sides of the person having his/her turn to have his/her things processed.

They also litter around on the street and those Indian/Pakistani areas can be very dirty. They think someone else will take care of it, whatever they do.

A number of them have no concept of public (work) situations and private life, even though they are very conscious about how they appear to other people. And I don't know why, but many Indians don't take notes or keep records. They are so confident and think they will remember everything but the reality is they don't remember anything when they need to remember the thing.

Firstly goodday, I am an Indian and I love most cultures in the world..... I would just say each human and his way to spread his culture is different.... people in this blog stress on curries and odour.... simply the oil makes a lot of difference in the curries, it depends on the area from where that indian comes or has the receipe from... secondly we are not all unclean.... it also the education that makes an individual aware of all these stuff@@@ and there are many those are not educated.... it is just certain things we dont like of other cultures in this world... example american dont like curry smelling indian,,,, similarily my aunt who is a citizen of london hates nigerians becoz they smell bad... they drink from the same glass what the patient drinks... but that doesnt make the whole nigeria bad..... its just a few bastards... and its just not that indians want to be at your country, its also the american buisness owners in your country who dont want to provide you jobs becoz they want to make more money by giving it to other countries with lesser salary to pay.... digest these truths please!!!!!!!!

Okay, I agree; some indians may smell like curry and b.o. but you can't generalize everyone. Most of the Indians I know shower twice a day so you can't blame them for their genetic trait to sweat a lot. My parents were both raised in India and while my mother does have an accent, my father mastered the American language. I, who was born and raised in in Jersey City in New Jersey, do not have an accent and can differentiate between my v's and w's. As for the overly prude fobs, I somewhat agree with you guys. Some of them who stick to Hindu customs do not risk anything and don't put out until marraige, which is really sad. No offense...

Well thanks for a laugh. Reading this was hilarious. XD

The people from India that I have interacted with have had a hard time fitting in. I was born with the idea of ameliorating my life. I want to make the situation better for myself and make a positive contribution to the United States, so that this good thing can last well into the future. Work hard, play by the rules, become successful, and give back are the words of my America. I give back by showing a little humility, empathy, and respect to the thoughts and ideas of other Americans, because I know there is no freer place, no better place, than the United States of America.

People from India have difficulty with words like humility, empathy, and respect. India's people come here, disrespect our country, spit on our flag, and make a mockery of our laws. Time and again, we've heard of people from India breaking laws and getting away with it for whatever reason. They put America's health in jeopardy by not bathing themselves and keep clean their homes and businesses. Heck, they worship the rat in India, what can you expect.

59 Name: Indians in Canada : 2012-06-29 22:31 ID:e2IUvCx/

I am an Indian whose been living in Canada for about six years. Over the years I am starting to realise where a lot of these bigots are coming from.

For instance, the inability to wait in lines thing, I totally get it now. I had found it bizzare that Canadians waited in line for everything, even when they don't have to and some dumb ass is wasting everyones time. Many Indians in Canada are blindsided by pride, and think too highly of themselves so I can get why people have complained about huimility. And Indians take too much pride in their food, regardless of its consequences on the healthcare system, or even their own health.

In these respects, Indians are almost exactly like Americans! Except our food has more flavour :P

60 Name: Anonymous : 2012-07-03 23:40 ID:uGaE4qaN

My parents' neighborhood has slowly become an almost exclusively Indian neighborhood. It was mostly white people and Asians when they moved in, but over the years their neighbors have been displaced by more and more Indians.

One thing they, and I, have noticed is that if they ever go out for a walk around the neighborhood, there's usually at least one or two older Indian women standing on their porch or at their window giving them the evil eye as they walk by. Not really sure what that's about, but it doesn't exactly make for good neighbors.

My best friend is from India, I met him in the early 90s. I am white and from the Midwest. During the last few months I have been working in a technology dept as a consultant where all (and I mean ALL) the people are from India. I have to say that the culture in the work environment is very difficult for me to adapt to. The stove pipe management, lack of cooperation and team work between them and the way the managers address there subordinates is much different then I am used to. All the people are talented and hard workers but the productivity is low do to not sharing knowledge amongst themselves.

Toilets and tubs are filthy dirty.
Most of the women don't work they stay at home and cook .
Never seen a vacuum in their apts.

I have to say I always saw Indians as hard working polite people. When I lived in the UK I couldn't understand why people hated them. Until I advertised for a roommate. A Indian Dr. in his 2nd year of residency applied and I felt well he would be clean and
quiet. Quiet maybe but clean NO! FILTHY! I had to give him notice to vacate due to the filth, I had told him about it numerous times. OMG the bathroom is disgusting..I have seen subways that are cleaner. And he never listens, perhaps because I a am a woman. 14 days and counting and I am going to have to get a new mattress (as rooms were furnished) Have the entire second floor cleaned. He won't see a penny of his security...too dirty and smelly.

To Jean - It doesn't have anything to do with being a woman. My roommate is Indian and she's a female (and so am I). She is so dirty. Every time she uses the kitchen she leaves a mess everywhere. She leaves food on the kitchen counter tops (one morning I went into the kitchen to cook breakfast and there's a drumstick on the counter), sauce is everywhere including on the walls and all over the floor and she won't clean it, she leaves dirty dishes in the sink overnight - I can go on and on. It's so weird because I cook all the time and always make sure to clean thoroughly - that's how I was taught in my family.

Hindu or Muslim, almost everyone in the Indian continent cannot be trusted about anything and they're worst than the British tabloids, they network to sabotage by gossip, first anyone who is not Indians, next anyone who is t from their respective caste, third, fourth, fifth ..... So much are the sizing up of people. And they've got this kick out of the most malevolent practice of disgracing people especially ones they can bully or find vulnerable. They're all cowards, they're sheepish when each alone but turn into true perpetrators as groups. Horrible people! Scum of Asia!

Indians are raised in a poor, third world country. Hence, the vast majority of of them do not know how to maintain a simple household.

1) Filthy - the apartments they rent are filthy, they never clean, and the bathroom is hell. Living like Pigs.

2) the FUCKING smell. They smell, spices, curry, grease...

3) they want to mix with white people, cause they themselves don't like their women, who are most of the time ugly.

4) Some of them are highly intelligent (some quality in 1 Billion).

Sorry, op, that's how it is. You want to blend in? Stop being cheap, CLEAN everywhere after yourself, and don't ever cook the fucking curry.

I think that not all of them are like this. I know some, they are completely different. For those who decide to go there or come to the US, there is a good F-191 form (<a href=https://usimmigrationforms.com/form-i-191-application-for-advance-permission-to-return-to-unrelinquished-domicile/>https://usimmigrationforms.com/form-i-191-application-for-advance-permission-to-return-to-unrelinquished-domicile/</a>), which can be useful. Maybe someone will need it, so I decided to leave it here... :)
