Generally I agree with >>2. I don't think the site is having trouble being kept alive, seeing as it isn't currently accepting donations.
That said, I'm not particularly opposed to adverts if they are within the relevancy of the BBS (like 6ch or another board, even though I probably won't use anywhere else). If they are small banners like the board headings here and are 4-ch focused (with AA, for example) they might even be welcome.
if it went for it straight after losing the old google ads it might work, but after this long without any banner ads it would just look jarring

Why would 4-ch go through financial issues? Hosting is cheap these days, and 4-ch is text-only with a small userbase.
Ads are entirely unnecessary.
I wouldn't be surprised if this bbs runs on a $20/year hosting lol
