Just a simple question. I suffer from severe social anxiety and my coping mechanism is to wear a costume of a non threatening, not perverted, non furry unicorn that I bought at Walmart. This past weekend I was denied entry in to an amusement park with the costume. I tried explaining to the manager that I need it to not get overwhelmed in crowds as it helps me block out the noise. However, Indian tribes can opt out of this immunity which in turn gives them perks from the government. I have all the information about this but it's all mumbo jumbo to me. Tor is suspect in that it started out as a research project in the USA military (Roger Dingledine worked for the US Navy). But it has trust because credible people like Edward Snowden and Bruce Schneier endorse it. Snowden even showed us a document where the NSA wrote "we will never be able to unmask 100% of Tor users 100% of the time", showing Tails+Tor+Signal as their nightmare combo.
That also means they have been targeting these systems of course: For sure they can unmask individual users through putting some effort into a correlation attack (ie. flood the hidden service, see where on the physical network traffic increases) and for sure they have people planting backdoors (possibly even in Tor/Tails these days). But you had good reason to trust Tails and Tor in 2013.

Truecrypt was another thing that actually worked. We know this because there was a famous case in Murica where the FBI could not break Truecrypt encryption. One day, while the project was more popular than ever, the website suddenly announced that development had stopped and nobody should use Truecrypt anymore because it wasn't safe. The developers (who were always anonymous) haven't been heard from since.
Torchat, another thing that actually worked. Stopped being updated, for no apparent reason. No longer in development.
Ricochet, another anonymous messenging app seems to have suffered the same fate. It grew in popularity but then just stopped. Latest release is from 2016 with no further updates to the website.
