What happened to Wakachan/Idlechan? (22)

I went to it but it's gone.

Wakachan died a long time ago now, around 2016 probably. To my knowledge little of it was archived. A few of the boards that were part of the network survived, but not many, most were already dead by then. They were later united under a new Idlechan site at idlechan.net, which died shortly the same year. All locally hosted boards except the general "board discussion" and the site banner board were archived by the admin, and uploaded to archive.org much later by killsushi. Shanachan survived for another while but then also died. Part of it was archived, but only the fetish board (thanks to Bozek for that). A few other boards survived.

Last Idlechan archive: https://archive.org/details/idlechan-boards
Shanachan fetish board: http://bozek.cz/shanachan.org/
Surviving boards:
Azumanga board: https://ib.axypb.net/azu/index.html (features an archive of all the old /azu/ threads from Wakachan)
Dictators: http://www.mufunyo.net/dic/ (one of Wakachan's last surviving original boards)
/tan/: https://kakashi-nenpo.com/tan/ (this one and the one after were made for idlechan.net I think and were not part of the original Wakachan, though they're based on older boards)
/snow/: https://kakashi-nenpo.com/snow/
There might be a few more still around.

IIchan died many years ago. Wakachan survived for a years longer than IIchan.

Well, iichan/wakachan was a loose collection of boards scattered through many sites. The actual original 'iichan' site died many years ago and most of the boards were picked up by others of the wakachan collective. Some were lost entirely. As far as I know the only board still up was the tracker music board hosted on iiichan (just looked, humblefool has finally closed even that). The /b/ board along with several others from iichan migrated to Shanachan, also now gone. After Wakachan closed several years ago, one of the guys created idlechan.net to serve the diaspora but it didn't catch on and was closed in 2017. It was often commented during that time that it just wasn't the same, it felt like time to turn off the lights.

The only surviving iichan board that still has a notable following is /azu/ as mentioned above.

I hope that clears it up, I think that's pretty concise.

Seems like just yesterday I could open up Post Modern Furniture Society within the wakachan frame and look at the brilliant things posted. A shame it's all gone. The idea of an imageboard network spanning all parts of the internet always seemed cool. It has a kind of decentralized community feel to it. IIchan/wakachan was one of the largest I knew and enjoyed lurking. Obviously it won't be coming back, and even if it did, it won't be anything like it used to. Towards the end of its life and for most of its life it was just a handful of regulars posting on and off. I don't imagine many of those hardened vets still stick around these places anymore. Though I do hope that one day a place like iichan will sprout up again. Maybe a few boards owners could get together and start something similar.

Various flavors of Overchan still exist, though.
And the idea has gone out of style with the introduction of user boards.

What is stopping any of us from starting a new idlechan and letting it idle no matter how little traffic it gets? Just like the old days.

Seriously, domains and hosting are cheaper than ever

>>9 Whats the point?

>>10 Right, the magic is gone. It would feel more like forced work than an autonomous collective. Very little point, it would be a dud.

I know who's not invited to the restored idlechan....

I miss iichan so much ;_;
it really exemplified the early 00s nature and feel of the internet and Japanophile/otaku culture.
Things aren't the same without that place.
4-ch is literally the last bastion of 90s - 00s esque otaku culture and once this place is gone the sun will finally set.

Anyone know the story of what happened at the death? Did somebody just take down the servers "because lol"?

17 Name: Anonymous : 2019-11-19 22:20 ID:uXiWKetg

i forgot what ended it, that was a long time ago, there might be someone on /azu/ who still remembers

Woah, hey. Wasn't expecting a Shanachan archive. Strange question to the person who runs it, do you have the htmls?

19 Name: Anonymous : 2019-11-24 12:29 ID:Heaven

It's run by Bozek, you can email him to ask, but I think when he originally posted that archive he said he didn't have the html.

Most of the boards slowly died due to lack of use, others just got forgotten by the owners and went down, CP spam, etc. Wakachan's main site then died in 2016, either due to child porn spam (I heard something about that, but I don't know if it's true and I don't remember the details) or just the admin forgetting to renew the domain. Everything was briefly revived on idlechan.net and then it died again due to the admin having better things to do, passing the torch to Shanachan. Shanachan then died, once again either due to owner losing interest, or due to CP spam. The usual story.
