First imageboards? (12)

On another site I made a thread about oldschool imageboard culture and spoke of 4chan back in the mid 00s.
This one pissant came into the thread and arrogantly claimed that wasn’t oldschool and started talking about having been going to imageboards on usenet.
He didn’t even know about the Japanese origins of imageboards.
Is he wrong though or were there actually imageboards on Usenet that predate the Japanese textboard and imageboards.

I mean, usenet is kind of the first digital bulletin board system (the precursor being ACTUAL bulletin boards). It's not entirely crazy to call it an imageboard. I think an important distinction is that usenet was pseudonymous at best and it was the anonymity of Japanese text/imageboards that distinguished them from other forums of the time.

Technically, that would be b3ta.

Textboards and imageboards aren't the same thing World2ch was just English 2ch like how this site is now.

There were two imageboards on world2ch. They used futaba. At least a few months before 4chan was founded.

if imageboard is an anonymous forum where you have to start the thread [necessarily] with an image, the first one was from a chankoro
i do not remember the name anymore, but it was pornographic and it did not last long
but if we need to consider only the format—as it is known today—it was the tor@kanrinin script, year 2000

some non-japs say it was the lnb based on the filthy work of some tripfags from 4chan
lol this is a complete lie or a huge mistake
first of all that in lbnb the threads [if we could call them that] were not necessarily started with images
the images were attached to posts and this system was much earlier than the creation of lnb
also there were already public scripts much earlier than lnb, such as freebbs
by the way, the script used by the first lbn (and many of the following ones) was older than lbn and had already been used by shiba, for example
there have been other bbses—much earlier than lbn—with the exact same fucking function of attaching images
however, they were all in japanese language, anonymous culture was created by japs, it is an undeniable fact
there was no anonymity on usenet; no imageboards on usenet

There were binary newsgroups where people shared image files (among other things) in the form of binary text that you could download, but they didn't display images, and to my knowledge they weren't called "imageboards" or even "boards". The imageboard format derives from web-based Japanese BBSes similar to what we're posting on right now, and the dial-up BBSes that directly preceded them. That makes binary newsgroups a distant cousin to imageboards, but not a direct ancestor.

>if imageboard is an anonymous forum

The anonymity aspect is a bit of a moot point; while the Japanese almost never used their real names, the use of pseudonyms was prevalent on Japanese underground sites in the 90s, and even today there are many Japanese boards out there where virtually every poster uses some form of name and/or trip.

>but if we need to consider only the format—as it is known today—it was the tor@kanrinin script, year 2000

I believe the first "proper" imageboard script (one where you upload image files directly to the board, and don't simply hotlink to images hosted elsewhere) was Toru's imgboard.cgi. On their site they claim it was "released as the world's first upload bulletin board with embedded images" on January 24, 1998 ( http://www.big.or.jp/~talk/t-club/soft/mini_r6/index.cgi ). They even namedrop 4chan as a popular site that's based on their script, and in a way it's kinda true; LetsPHP!'s GazouBBS (first released in October 2000) was one of several blatant clones of imgboard, and Futaba originally used imgboard for their first imageboard before switching to GazouBBS a couple of months later.

>some non-japs say it was the lnb based on the filthy work of some tripfags from 4chan

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a Japanese source stating outright that Licentious Notice Board was the first imageboard (for what it's worth, the first iteration opened in August 1997 and closed in October 1997), but I have seen several Japanese sources (some of which were written years before 4chan's existence) stating that it was:

  • a popular underground site
  • shared many posters with Ayashii World sites
  • was considered a treasure trove of great images
  • had many posters adept at creating high quality idol collages and humorous photoshops
  • had a huge amount of momentum during the peak of its first iteration, supposedly comparable with 2ch of later years (I saw this claim in a "what was LNB like?" thread on 2ch from 2003; I don't know if it was hyperbole or not)
  • led to such a craze that it ended up being the origin of all the countless ero-oriented imageboards that existed by the early 2000s

As you said, the original LNB almost certainly used MiniBBS (first released in May 1996); the same script that most Ayashii World sites were using from September 1997 onwards, as well as many other sites. However, based on archives of various LNB sequels and spinoffs I've seen, they were using modified versions of MiniBBS that allowed users to paste images URLs into a field, and those images would show up in posts as hotlinked images (stock MiniBBS didn't have such a feature as far as I'm aware, but I haven't looked into that yet). So instead of uploading directly to the board, posters would have their own Tripod sites or whatever, upload their images there, then paste the URLs on LNB where it would be hotlinked in their posts.

>there have been other bbses—much earlier than lbn—with the exact same fucking function of attaching images

I'd be interested to know what those were if you remember any names, scripts, etc.

to say that in the angura scene the use of nicknames were usual should not be done without qualifiers
usenet/netnews works with nicknames only but in real anonymous spaces, the blank space was always absolutely prevalent
create identities never been well-liked, with rare case-by-case exceptions
some conquer his space in history, many in a jummy way and others, mostly, hateful
the "anti-attwhorism", lets say, is innate to the anonymous japanese culture, inside and outside its bases, although contradictory
i remember the pd-sam, hyper and other portals of virtual vexation
today no one cares about these things, they even consider it normal and necessary that third parties have access to ips
you said tripcodes but this was a strange [function] to anonymous culture as a whole from the beginning
it spread gradually but with resistance, and it still not being well seen even within the house even after so many years

i must apologize, i said "freebbs" earlier, in my memory it was free-blablabla-something, i ended up mixing things up, but it is "free imgboard"
if i am not mistaken, it is also a "blatant copy" of the minibbs, but i would not say so, it seems disdainful to me
i do not know what you consider by imageboard, there were others with the function of attaching images, some one-line-bbs
i remember a modification of myubbs where i saw jovious girls dressed as they came into the world
besides there were modifications of the scriot of arkadia and others, i can not give you more precise names
a long time ago, i do not remember much anymore, unfortunately i was a teenager in heat, they were all... pornographic

about the lnb, it was nothing like that, it was not THAT popular, there were not so many users of strangeworld, they did not post many images
the lnb from yy was good, the one administered by tak also, however, nor were they at all like the description
i remember that they talking about music everytime, and from time to time someone posted an erotic photo and some gossips
it seems to me that you have read, or someone has read and you have received information indirectly, from some of the bxjp texts
he was a regular at the lnb, so it is to be expected that he will pull the rope to his side lol

one clarification about lnb
the first generation there were not so many users from strangeworld
the second, not much, but especially the third there were many
