The characters could be more developed, a lot of the social commentaries are ham fisted, the humour falls flat more often than not, status quo is god so there's not much tension and the romance was laden with forced drama.

The writers only told and did very little showing; the space battles were samey; antagonists(who are variable) are consistently stupid; the animation is incredibly unreliable and mercurial; tactical 'skill' in the universe requires nothing more than a lack of mental retardation and a elementary level geometry knowledge; the show ran for the better part of a season without most of it's meaningful characters; Reuenthal and the writers get bored with his standing for no reason; the battles serve the plot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it makes a lot of battles stupid and they lose stakes.
