You make some good points, and I agree with the gist of what you're saying. I, too, wish for an internet where people focus on the community rather than the individual. That's why I love places like DQN.

However, I think your idealization of the Japanese internet isn't quite true. (Keep in mind that the following is based on personal experience, not concrete data.) I've found the average Japanese internet user to be as guilty of individualism as their western counterparts. Japanese know of 2-ch, but most people I meet use it rarely, favoring more personal sites. Mixi, twitter and personal blogs are very popular, and Facebook is rapidly gaining ground as well.

And then I've found that even 2-ch itself is not really the magical heaven of quality that we sometimes to make it out to be. They have plenty of stupid posters, elitists and spammers, just like the western internet.

In short, I think the concept behind 2-ch is noble and wonderful, but nothing is perfect in practice. Wherever you go, you will have to do some sifting to get the quality. The most we can do is keep trying to make entertaining posts, and hope other users follow suit.
