So there I was, computering about, when I happened to look up and see, above a stack of shelves, just where the wall meets the ceiling, a little black shape. Yes, you guessed it (no you didn't), it's a butterfly. Some sort of Nymphalidae; most likely another small tortoiseshell, but I can't tell until I can persuade it to spread its little wings.

I'm dumbfounded by the sheer absurdity of it. For something like this to happen once is an amusing coincidence, but twice, in the same place, to the same person - who coincidentally is also a lepidopterist? (Aside: no, spellcheck, I really did mean "lepidopterist", not "teleprompters") I feel like shouting at the little thing, "What are you doing‽ Don't you know what happened to the last of you who tried to hibernate here‽"

As the weather had cheered up, I decided to gently persuade my dear guest to leave for greener pastures - and, my goodness, it did not want to go. I managed to catch it under a glass and take it outside, at which point it, hesitantly, flew away... back indoors. I had to catch and release it again, after which it finally conceded and fluttered away, over the hedge and out of sight.

It was a small tortoiseshell after all, and a rather bedraggled specimen at that. I do hope it's happier outdoors - ultimately, all that awaited it here was slowly starving to death, after all. On the other hand, there was also a thunderstorm not long after I sent it on its way. I hope it made it through alright.

Actually, I sort of miss it now.

Niven's Law is: there is nothing so good, no cause so noble, that some of the people in favor of it won't be assholes.

So if bad people can like good things, I am sure that good people can like bad things, even if--especially if--they understand that though they may desire it, they may wish to do it, they mustn't actually DO bad things. I submit it's possible to want to do things while knowing they're bad and wrong, and know better than to actually do them. We can't choose what we desire. We can't choose whether or not to want to do something, only whether we act on it.
