Current "kek" didn't come out of the WoW filter, it grew independently. It came out of a corruption of "lel" which was really popular on /sp/. "lel" was in heavy use in the early 2010s which led to various corruptions popping up. Other than "kek," some other variations that never really took were "lil," "lyl," "lal," "jej," "l0ll," "lgl," and "lql." The earliest common use of "kek" can be found on /sp/ if you look through archives around the early 2010 period. The WoW filter association may have contributed to its growth though as people recognized it and adopted it.
