I can't watch anime anymore. (33)

Have you ever realized how unnatural and cringy the dialogue is in a lot of anime?

When I was a teen, I used to watch loads of moeblob anime and thought it was nice and cute etc. but then my irl Japanese friend told me that nobody actually talks like this in Japan except chuunis and manchildren.

Then I started paying closer attention to what the characters were saying, their mannerisms, etc. And now I've come to the point where I can't even watch an anime without cringing, unless the dialogue is realistic.

Does anyone else here feel the same?

I think the problem with moeblob is that the people who write it are shut-ins who are socially detached, so they don't know how to write good dialogue, so they rely on exaggeration and other anime-isms to replace it.

There definitely is good anime out there. Anime for adults, with smooth, natural sounding dialogue. Off the top of my head, there's LoGH, Monster, Cowboy Bebop, Eva, Mushishi (maybe?).

I struggle with most anime I watch. At times it can get really frustrating.

We're on the same boat. I've been watching less and less anime per season because I cringe so hard whenever I hear those shitty voices. I can instantly drop an anime just because of its voice acting.

It's a cartoon. Do you think Americans talk like Bugs Bunny or something?

Bugs is based on Clark Gable's character from It Happened One Night so somewhat?

This thread is another example of how even the most obscure, hole-in-the-wall anime board is indistinguishable from reddit, MAL, 4chan and youtube comments. Just fucking shit-eating casual retards everywhere.

I haven't watched anime in a long time, but whenever I hear or see the usual characteristics of a moe anime it usually just makes me cringe and want to stop seeing or hearing it. I get its a cartoon, but even with some other ones they at least don't try to do what ever other anime is doing.

What are you watching? And if it is making you frustrated, why keep watching?

9 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2020-01-09 19:22 ID:xAm4PUlS

Why in the fucking world would I want to watch an anime with characters that act like real people? I watch anime to get away from annoying assholes, I don't want to see them there too. People who complain about there being no realism in fictional content are fucking retarded. You included, OP.

I notice it, but I'm not watching for real people. I'd just go outside if I wanted that.

11 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2020-02-27 13:37 ID:zhVGH35Q

Why the fuck would I want to emulate the real world in anime?

If you want anime to flawlessly replicate real life, then go watch movies or TV dramas. "The voices don't sound natural"; you'll notice the same about American cartoons. In fact, if you listen closely to the dialogue in a lot of movies you'll notice it's quite stilted and doesn't really sound much like how real people speak, even movies with good actors.

To paraphrase what >>9 said, you're dumb as shit if your main complaint about anime is that it isn't more like real life. Especially moeblob anime. It's pure wish fulfilment, you're supposed to watch it and NOT think about the real world.

I am autistic, all dialogue sounds strange to me, in real life or in anime. At least in anime it's easy to read the facial expressions, and characters aren't speaking in coded language like real life. If there's a cute girl and she ends her sentences with "nyaa" that's the end of it, there's nothing more to read into it than just "this character said nyaa" in real life there's always layers that i don't understand, everyone's trying to look cool or avoid seeming "cringe".

Sometimes the autism of anime is funny... And sometimes give me cringe. However, now I can accept more autism form Japan. Nya~

The problem I think OP is getting at is this:

  • bad writing
  • bad voice acting
  • bad storyline
  • unrealistic when it is expected to have some realism
  • shit being directed at children, but you are an adult so don't find that mind numbing crap to be interesting

Maybe some of those complains are mine. I watched season 1 and 2 of "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure" (English dub) on Netflix, and while it was interesting and had its high points, I felt like over all it was sorta lame. Sometimes I would switch over to the Japanese audio to hear the interesting Engrish.

It felt like the show was directed towards children and teenagers, which is not a problem to me insofar as it is still appealing to me. However, some stuff only children and teens can really like. As an adult I do like watching "Courage the Cowardly Dog" (so far), probably more than I liked watch Jojo. Maybe the difference is one is more in the action genre and the other is more in the humorous genre.

"Don’t then." may not be the only solution. Maybe if I was drunk or buzzed when watching Jojo I would've liked it better. So far, I do quite like season 3 of "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure". I've been watching the English dub of it on Netflix; I hope the season doesn't go downhill (like I guess HBO/Home Box Office went downhill).

Speaking of bad animes, should I watch the "Death Note" anime series on Netflix? I've heard that there is some controversy around the Netflix version of it, like they changed some things that they shouldn't have or something. I know that Netflix censored gore in the Jojo series so that little kids can watch it or some dumb reason.

Try watching the new Hunter X Hunter anime after watching the old one.

No idea. It probably was about their adaptation being absolute shit that raped the original. I watched the review shitting on it 4 times already, maybe it excuses the existence of it somewhat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njmCtiO_Xj8

Especially movies with good actors.
There is a reason, why a genre called "mumblecore" exists.

Isn't this a copypasta? I swear I heard the same thing about the AVGN.

It reads like a pasta, but I've been seeing a surprisingly large amount of non-pasta critiques on AVGN/Nostalgia Critic/TGWTG/(etc) that runs along the same lines as of late. This is especially true since Mister Metokur released his series on TGWTG and related parties.

Not super surprising, all things taken into account, since AVGN/TGWTG was largely something that Millenial/early Zoomer kids would watch in their teens. That particular generation has always struck me as being incapable of realizing that some of what they enjoyed in the past is stupid and letting bygones be bygones, so they tend to let out that particular neurosis by reeing about it on the Internet instead. lol

I love media that embraces a distinction between realistic speech and dramatic speech. I don't care if it's not realistic. It is a dramatic form. It is inherently artificial. It should embrace that and pull all the tropes that make us like it to begin with.

Moreover anime nor movies are reality they simple narrate a reality. Now how well they script it is what makes it appealing and even that is subject to change as it becomes aged

2d girls do not speak like 3d girls because 2d girls are cute and 3d are not.

>>5 this is perfect comparison. We, westerners, depict animals as animals and don't compare ourselves. But they depict themselves and their culture and LOOK DIGUSTING, that is so true.

>>1’s concerns is about the tropes - specifically the voice acting - and not the medium itself. most people here are conflating the two.

Anime - Japanese Animation - is just a medium.

The saccharine moe talk, the autism of chuunis, the incessant screaming of shounen protags, fanservices boobas, &c are all tropes which you may or may not incorporate in a show.

Miyazaki films comes to mind that almost have normal voice acting

>Miyazaki films

That's the start of the pipeline, with degens fapping to Re:Zero at the end of it.

Anime just got cursed sometime by mid 2000s, it's no coincidence that has been the golden age of Moeblob up to and including point blank unapologetic lolicon (Moetan, Skygirls...).

In the end, animes are still cartoons. There's no helping that shounen protags or moe talk has exaggeration because it's not supposed to be real and some people want fantasy.
