The movie "Densha Otoko" (Train Man) is to be shown in several countries in East Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, following sales efforts at the recent Cannes Film Festival. The movie is based on a supposedly true story that played out on the Channel 2 web site, Japan's most popular BBS. It tells of an "otaku" (nerd), played by Yamada Takayuki (21), who comes to the rescue of a woman (Nakatani Miki, 29) being groped on a train. Not knowing how to pursue his newly found love, he turns to the Web for help and advice. The love story was turned into a best-selling book and has the subject of a lot of publicity over the last year, and has publishers scouring the Web looking for the next big hit. The biggest question that remains is whether it's really a true story of innocent love triumphing or just a clever marketing ploy. The movie opens on June 4.

so hey. for someone who has seen the first 8 episodes but not the last three, which subs (aviness, densha-lover or masakun) are the best?

They all have their advantages and errors. For instance, I liked aviness the best as far as translation went, but some of the subs overlap sometimes, timing errors I guess.

IIRC Masakun did the best job with the cultural references and translation overall, but aviness was better with the colloquialisms and speed. I think I have Masakun as the source for my DVDs (gotta love SRT -> DVD sub converters).

Well, that's that. T_T So great! I was emoting along with them in the narration after they meet, and in the graduation scene. When I realized that no, it wouldn't be right for him to stay, I was all (´･ω･`). And then ｡･ﾟ･(ﾉД`)･ﾟ･｡ yes! go and don't look back! The "adult's kiss" was hilarious. My girlfriend and I have been watching all of Densha Otoko TV series on dvd and it is fantastic!!

She also bought the movie version but I refuse to watch it as I don't think it will hold up now that I have seen this tv version.

It's like a drug, I cannot stop watching to find out what will happen next.

We are in the US and are seeing it subtitled in English, which has not been any problem. I know we have 11 episodes but I have heard there is a 12th??

I'm telling alot of my friends about this and I think it will be catching on around the world, just takes time.
I hope they never make a crappy American remake because it will suck as do most remakes of great films.

Actually, -tan is just an honorific suffix, and can be swapped in and out with -san, or others, depending on the situation.

It's not a regular suffix, and not used in normal conversation except by children who can't pronounce -chan. Otherwise it's used as an overly cute affectation for the subject. I wish people wouldn't overuse it so much.

That said, I liked Hermes but I think I liked the wife of the crazy haired 2ch-er more.

I liked Hermes, the girlfriend of the dude with dreads, and towards the end, even liked Imperial March girl. Although I personally couldn't be bothered to watch an episode to find out her name again.

I actually became bothered enough to find out the actress' name: Shiraishi Miho - and in the show she's known as Jinkama.

I just finished the TV series and found it extremely touching...never had a TV series nearly have me in tears! I wanna watch it all again!

Aside from the unsourced "according to FujiTV they're still together" bit from wikipedia, I don't think anyone in the general public knows who he really is (if he's real at all). All the posts were collected by someone else, and it's public domain, so the companies took the story freely.

I'm not sure I'd want to know about the real guy. The story is most powerful as a modern day fable... at most, I'd like to know how he's going. shrug (Who knows, maybe we'll hear from him on the one year reunion special)

This was the last film I saw at Fantasia before having to head home, and it was kind of a good place to stop. After a steady diet of serial killers, zombies, vampires, and other monsters, a film like "Train Man" supplies a different, but just as vital, fantasy, with the "based on a true story" making the world seem a brighter place.

It really is a shame what bad casting can do to a film. The guy who played densha was very unconvincing. Hell, the whole movie felt like that simpsons running joke about Ranier Wolfcastle playing a nerd (or a elementary school teacher)! It was just plain wrong.

Advice for those who only watched the TV series, don't bother watching the movie. I only wasted money hunting down and buying a copy. STICK WITH THE TV SERIES. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

I just finished watching Densha Otoko, and by finished I don't mean I watched all the episodes, I mean I just couldn't keep watching. I read the original posts, and no matter wether it was a faker or perhaps even several, the movie and the tv-series completely massacered it.

In the original posts, both Densha and Hermes are cute, interesting, and what happens is very believable, but due to all the added crap nothing of that survives for the shows, IMO. The series made Densha into a fucking I don't know what and Hermes made completely boring. The original textual descriptions of her have more appeal than both the movie and the series interpretations.... Put together.

Bah, totally fucking dissapointed, but I still very much enjoyed reading the original posts. Indeed inspired, no matter if it was a superior hoax or a fairy tale come true.

The actress playing Hermes in the film is Nakatani Miki. Supposedly, she got the role just because the "real" Densha said that Hermes look a lot more like her. Now..., Nakatani Miki was 29 when she starred in the film. But when she was younger, her beauty, i dare say, was unparelled. And Misaki-san is going to be 30 next year. Not bad for an obaasan (well, almost an obaasan).

I haven't read the entire thread, so I apologize ahead of time. But has there ever been any sort of update regarding how Densha and Hermes are doing today? With how well this romance has been built up, it would almost be heart breaking to hear if they weren't together anymore.

Densha Otoko is the third Jdorama I've watched. It's pure comedy! I know it's also a romance story but to me it's more funny than anything else. Yamada's two otaku friends, the evil version of Sakurai, and of course Aoyama Saori's good looks are memorable. Some of the skits were so funny my eyes teared and stomach cramped. I mean, c'mon, RC cars delivering diamond rings in an elaborate scheme to woo a woman's affection? Now THAT is funny. You could make a spoof jewelry store commercial out of it. The lighthouse skit was my favorite scene in the TV series.

The crazy theories about the 2ch owners coming up with the story to pay off lawsuit fines seems much less credible than the story in the posts themselves. They're great posts, and there's no denying the community enthusiasm behind the man. It could be just elaborate fiction he decided to write in a forum instead of a magazine article, but if you notice, it's kind of a boring story. There's no real conflict. It has a real anticlimactic ending that's satisfying because it's so authentic and relatable.

Note: I'm refering to the original posts, not the dramatized dorama.

If it's a fictional story, it's a really weird piece of fiction. I think the forum would catch on if it started sounding like fiction. The bit about Densha sitting down to watch that shoujo anime (what was it called? Perm-something?) and not being able to register or concentrate on it at all after the traumatic confession he undertook, is just too good to be fiction. Only the best fiction writers are able to come out with stuff like that.

I too loved the book and the TV drama.
The movie was good, but to be honest the Drama was better. Because of the length of the series it had alot more time to play the story out and, while some may argue that the dramatization was awful, it also allowed them to include those quirky comedy moments that made the show so memorable. (With the help of the new characters Jinkama and Kazuya. There's only so much the residents could provide.)

You're not breaking any rules, it is a cute and inspiring story, but imagine if like everytime someone heard a song from the beatles there was a post "oh wow guys this band is so great" in the music section. I liked the movie more than the TV show. Even though the woman felt a bit flat/unemotional in the movie, the characters were all around more believable I felt.
