I thought the followings about South Sudan was for something he will do, instead it was for something he already did.

So GN has taped. Doesn't sound too bad. Fingers crossed that there's no
cringe-iness.
I'm worried about the 'mega fan girled' part.
>>601 In a recent Vanity Fair Espana article, he mentioned being in a war zone in Africa. I'm sure there will be some sort of UN campaign regarding this trip soon.
I don't want to sound cynical, but the timing is interesting: trip in March, but campaign comes out much later in the year...say, just around the time his movies premiere, award campaigns start...maybe it's the UN's timing, not his.
PS - I see you, Luke. I see you and your UN campaign default mode.
Lol .. but it is probably a mutually beneficial relationship: Hiddleston has movies to promote .. the UN have a S Sudanese emergency to raise funds for plus the release of yet another set of prettily sloganed "goals" that most likely will not be reached and just replaced by another lot in a few years.
He just tweeted about the UN Global Goals or whatever, so yeah... I sense a UNICEF blog coming up. In all fairness, S Sudan is a lot hairier than Guinea and the kids in really dire shape (they just had yet another emergency with displaced people a month ago).
Finally .. where on EARTH is Luke in those photos? It just doesn't seem right ..
urgh.. I also see that the photos are now on tumblr without any context, though I suspect that there are busloads of fangirls madly googling "Jonglei" :\
Luke just out-pr-red the UN..
From the UN newsletter .. March 6.
An ongoing UNICEF field visit and project
assessments is being supported by UNHAS.
During the week, three missions were facilitated
to Malakal for the visit of the UK National
Committees and the UNICEF High Profile
supporter Mr. Tom Hiddleston; visit of children
formerly associated with the Cobra Faction at the
Interim Care Centre in Pibor; and a Rapid
Response Mission (RRM) to Nyanapol.

UN and UNICEF are not the same thing - global goals I think is a UN initiative and the trip to Sudan was separate through UNICEF.
The latter organisation did mention the trip to S Sudan in March it seems, and when TH went to Guinea they didn't hold details of that trip back for 6 months IIRC. It would be a weird thing to do if they needed to fundraise straight away in March - and would they really let TH manipulate them and the news cycle to that extent? In fairness to TH the person who revealed more was the photographer who may have seen a retail opportunity for his pics because TH is in the news.
I should have said, I mean, I know they are from the same origin in the 40s but UNICEF works and publicises itself separately from the UN so support for one doesn't necessarily imply working with or supporting the other. I think Angelina Jolie is a UN special ambassador or something but not really involved in UNICEF.
>>611 Yep, they are 2 different things especially in the results they obtain. Besides, the UN video is a video with many celebrities, not just him, and like TH says in the VF interview he was invited, trips to war zones aren't organized to fit film promotion.
"Has the ‘Kong: Skull Island’ Plot Been Revealed?"
http://screencrush.com/kong-skull-island-plot-details-revealed/
>>614 That sounds shite. Group of adventurers arrive on island on one or or another flimsy pretext (who really cares what) and end up doing battle with - surprise! - creature that lives there which isn't at home to visitors, even if one of them is TH wearing hot Indiana Jones style explorer gear. Disappointingly generic in my view. Why does TH think this is a new and exciting treatment? Obviously he has read the script (or one of the many versions) but I wait to be convinced on the advisability of this project.
>>615 Maybe TH means it's great because of his character? Like when he kept saying the script for ISTL was great and Abraham was great but in reality script and direction were panned and what was great was his performance. Of course, Jurassic World was bland too and had great success, so let's hope the film is enjoyable and it doesn't bomb.
>>616 I did think of ISTL - another project suggesting his instincts aren't 100% strong. I think that whatever he says he may be guilty of chasing both Oscar and commercial success instead of doing what others say is the best way to achieve those things, namely choosing the best projects and letting critical and commercial success take care of itself.
>>611 The UN and UNICEF are - for all intents and purposes - the same organization. UNICEF's parent organization is the UN - the general assembly votes on and oversees UNICEF protocol and campaigns. It is part of the UN's common system. UNICEF does not work independently of the UN.
All international organizations that cross borders - except for the CIA and similar ones - must details the movements of their employees and operatives in an organizational circular.
These circulars are different from any promotional campaigns that may happen at the same time or later.
>>617 But as far as he was concerned, his instincts were right. The role was challenging but he did great and received great reviews from important critics, all in all it was a win for him, even if the film is a fiasco. HR didn't do so great either with critics that count, but here too it's on the director.
To me what looks iffy about Skull is the director, the number of script-writers they changed so far and the fact that Universal didn't stick with the project.
They are also equally alike in that both use celebrities to promote their policies. And celebrities use BOTH to promote themselves.
The UN general assembly is rather infamous for inviting celebrities to speak before it. Leo DiCaprio spoke about climate control at the UN...before getting on a private jet to fly off on holiday. TRUE. George Clooney had been angling for a full assembly speech for the longest time, but only got a security counsel speaking gig - and then resigned from his 'peacekeeper' position. He said it was because he no longer had time - he'd never spent much time on it, anyway. Likely, it had everything to do with the UN not giving him a more high-profile part in UN PR.
The UN and UNICEF use and are used for PR.
Jolie is probably one of the few UN/UNICEF celebs whose role is completely PR-less - and I say that not being her biggest fan - at all. The number of trips she undertakes is 10x that of other ambassadors. And many of her trips are not reported - except in UN circulars.
As for results, both are similar as well. For the time, effort and money poured into the UN and UNICEF - their results amount to nearly jack all.
But then an organization with that many member states and such a large mandate - it's not going to be able to accomplish a 10th of its programs.
But NATO - raise your hand if you work for NATO (raises hand) - there's an organization that gets shizza done!!
>>614 We can disagree on UN/UNICEF policy and TH's PR - but we can all gather around the fire over this one.
Shite. And double shite.
Was he high when he read this script that it makes his fizz with excitement and it blew him away with its unique vision? Unique?!? I want to trust you TH, but you're making it so hard.
Is Luke vetting these scripts?
>>621 About Dicaprio you forgot the renting of a yacht to go back and forth for the world champion of football in Brazil. But let's save the seas, sure.
Anyway, I think what Anon meant was that while UNICEF is part of the UN, and while I'm sure UNICEF from some countries make use of celebs for PR, UNICEF does practical work on the ground that actually achieves something, while the UN have Shakira concerts and useless meetings on how to better ignore international crisis.
In that VF Spain interview he also say he will soon talk about this trip to South Sudan (unless my scarce Spanish failed me)
>>625 Not ironic AT ALL - she screams. We get shit done at NATO!! Keeping the Ruskies from the gates for over 60 years - thank you very much.
In all seriousness, NATO has disaster relief missions, logistical support missions in non-member states and crisis management missions...just like the UN.
What we don't have is celebrities taking professional photogs to the war zones.
And I honestly don't have celeb-envy...not that much!!
I think you're right regarding his instincts regarding the overall challenge of the ISTL role and the stretch it would give to his talents.
However, he read the script - which has taken a pasting by critics - and still said yes. Actors do that - they say yes to crappy scripts thinking their AWESOME performances will make it better. But that's not how it works. OLLA anyone - that script - did it even have a script?
Which is why I'm side-eyeing the hell out of that Kong script. Which has had more re-writes than my grad school thesis.
>>624 I have such distaste for LdC. From his desperate Oscar bait-ness to his insistence on using the Victoria's Secret universe as a mail order catalogue for girlfriends - younger and younger, blonder and blonder girlfriends.
TH ain't perfect - Lord knows - but he's a million miles away from LdC.
>>627 As someone who lives in a country that is member of NATO, that's the side I respect.
I am aware that there is a relationship of mutual back scratching without which most charities would get much less support from celebs. I still find it implausible however that he could fly to S Sudan in March and insist that this was not publicised until it coincided with his publicity for ISTL etc. If the UN wouldn't give Clooney the speaking gig he wanted then it isn't a total pushover is it? Clooney is a bigger star and for several years donated his Nespresso fees to monitoring the human rights situation in Sudan. TH has no profile like that to speak of and is nowhere near as big a star. I imagine it has something to do with the I agree totally pointless and narcissistic global goals - which can't possibly have been engineered by Luke to coincide with this month as they involve so many people. Also fundamentally Luke is a shit publicist. Does he really have the wit to do this? And even if he did does TH really strike one as such a calculating and conniving arsehole that he would say "yeah I'll go to Sudan but only if you release a licky press release just when I am pushing for an Oscaaaaar." I don't believe that of him - yet.
>>631 That is exactly the sort of agreements that are made with these partnerships. LdC made his speech in late September of 2013. It coincided with the start of his award campaign for TWOWS and DjUc. He joined IG on the same day. It was covered by broad and tabloid sheets. The Wall Street Journal was one of several big outlets that made mention of the opportune timing.
As I understand it, Clooney was refused a full assembly speech because he wouldn't commit to more trips on behalf of his position. Yes, there were negotiations to that backscratching program. And his 'spy program,' which was funded by most of his proceeds from his coffee commercials, was separate from the UN. Yep, GC ran a spy program - it really was just a single satellite that kept track of a man accused of crimes against humanity - like most of GC's movies.
eh .. UN anon here... to clarify: UNICEF (like the WFP, UNHCR and a whle lot of agencies) are, at the end of the day, entities / part of the UN.
I think that we need some sort of forum like the UN but I think years of working, have led me to be a tiny bit cynical about the trumpet blowing that all of the agencies do. UNICEF is actually one of the more productive UN agencies on the ground tbh.
To the best of my knowledge, no agency/organization is obliged to publically announce visits or anything of that nature .. UN / UNICEF probably have their own rules. I can assure you that many times, the organisation I worked with did cross borders and the only people who might have been aware, were the bosses in the HQ.
That set aside... back to Mr Hiddleston. :) I can only guess that they / he are waiting for an opportunity to raise the profile of the country with his visit. Perhaps it was better in terms of security, that he wasn't blogging everything he saw there. Perhaps he was a bit upset by what he saw there.. who knows... perhaps the S Sudanese kids were just really glad to have a visit from Loki. If they had electricity... and a telly. It just seems rather funny that the details of his visit were actually out there for 6 months before anyone got wind of it in the fandom :)
I am really not sure what to make of the script .. I can only guess that as a working actor who still has to audition for parts, he is happy to accept what he can get (which is fair enough) and / or he is really keen to break out of a stereotype English uptight character. Whatever the case, I would be confident that he will bring the same class, professionalism and enthusiasm that he has shown for his other projects so far.. fingers, toes and nose crossed..
>>631 The thing with Luke is that he seems to have only two default modes for publicity: society and humanitarian.
With people like Douglas Booth and Gemma Chan, it's been society - those two will show up to the opening of an envelope. Parties and catwalks - they'll be there. And their pics will end up in the DM.
With his higher profile clients, it's humanitarian. UN for EW and UNICEF for TH. That doesn't mean that they don't care for their respective campaigns. I think TH does - anyone willing to eat - not really live - on a quid a day, has commitment to a cause.
But, as you say, there's a strong mutual relationship between these charities and their respective supporters. So, It could very well be the case that Luke/TH and UNICEF decided that now would be the best time - for both of them - to talk about this trip. Otherwise, why not give it full mention - not a blurb in a circular - in the month it happened?
>>634 But he's pretty much finished with the press junket as he is about to vanish into filming ShitMovie, and he mentioned it once, and not directly. He has hardly been saving it up so he can yap about it during the last month.
I dont thinkt that they have talked about anything to do with the trip ... from the sounds of it, Couch Potato found the photographs online by accident. The mention in the internal UNiCEF circular had the depth of a page 6 byline.
As a 'high profile" supporter, this was a very low profile visit...
And I very much would like to hope that Tom isn't in the "find me an NGO" crowd and that he genuinely has an interest in the work that UNICEF are doing outside of the favourable aura cast on his "brand" as a result. I may be a bit naive however..
Hello, UN anon!
I know that NATO is required as an international organization to note 'publicly' - newsletter and circular - the major/key movements of its employees. That includes troop movements, although those can be VAGUE - like 'western hemisphere' vague if security is a concern. If a member state doesn't wish for its troops' locations to be mentioned, NATO will bend to those requests. I'm sure you're correct that the UN has its own rules.
The UN is well-meaning, but just needs to rein it in. 'Let's end global poverty!' What? How? It's the equivalent of saying, 'Let's turn copper into gold, or air into gold!' Small steps, UN, small steps.
Knowing that NATO employees are so well-versed in celebrity gossip and have so much free time on their hands certainly makes me believe in bright future of this organization!
I'm obviously not on the diplomatic scale! I work for the organization - but not even in Brussels (more's the pity! - I love me some waffles and moules et frites!).
I get my weekends, and have only travelled twice for business in the past year.
And I know plenty of UN-related gossip. Whenever the UN launches one of their high-profile campaigns, we gather in the office and mock them: 'Leo's man-bun ends acid rain,' or 'Hermione says it's okay to cry.' On Monday it will be Beyonce's leotard ends poverty.
>>639 Yes we are.
NATOAnon, UNAnon - it's horribly reminiscent of nw3anon, save only that her friends were laughably low powered by comparison (coffeeanon etc).
I think that this needs it's own thread :) .... I think that I am cynical wrt the yet another bleedin' slogan side of UNICE/UN and the fact that often, there is so much pressure for someone.. anyone to reach these goals that the details are sometimes fudged.
Does this make me neutral? ;)
And ehh... lets give the guy a chance to be in the movie before designating it to the shite pile. I guess he's really really pushing to break it in the US outside of the Avenger franchise.
I have high hopes for Crimson Peak!
(and I go back to being truly anonymous) :)
>>642 Don't mind me. I have an ironic turn of phrase, sharpened by the fact that I have been working this weekend. We can call it PossiblyShitMovie to keep our options open!
Hey, CouchPotato (the blue and original one) didn't find that by accident, but on Torrilla! That's very high profile! ;)
ShitMovie, lol poor Kong
We'll all eat crow when he wins an Oscar for Kong:Shit Movie - official title.
He's done some really serious, artsy-artsy stuff, I guess he's allowed to wear a fedora, carry a whip and fight a big monkey.
I'm saying it now - I intend to buy a FULL price ticket to 'Kong: Shit Movie' AND 'Godzilla vs Kong: Shit Movie II.' This is my promise.

>>645 I stand by my prediction. A thousand (!!) or more posts ago before Pursegategate I said I had a bad feeling about ISTL being a well meaning pile of poo and to judge by the reviews I was not wrong.
Yes, but what ISTL is missing is a giant CGI monkey!!
Once Godzilla vs Kong: Possibly Shit Movie II rolls around, the recipe will be perfected; it will have everything: TH, giant monkey, giant lizard, EO, MA to write the script and direct and produce!
They'll likely just cancel the Oscars and give them all to GvK:PSMII. Best actor: TH, Best Actress: Godzilla, BSActor: Kong, BSActress: EO.
How about Kong: Ape Shit? Or Shit Island?
In really important news - NATO, UN, world poverty, pfffft - the release dates for HR are worryingly far away. Important news - read: nearly nude sunbathing scene.
Besides for FFs, France is listed at 2016, Germany as September...2016, on IMDB. I've seen March 2016 for the UK - but unconfirmed. Nothing, of course, for the US.
>>649 I love the pun, but somehow Shit Island wins it for me.
Couch - or as you'll always be to some of us - Coach Potato, don't worry, I didn't think that rather sassy post re:NATO >>638 was from you!
I'm going to assume it was Ban Ki-moon. He tends to scour the internet looking for people badmouthing the UN and TH. Like all South Koreans, he too fell in love with TH's rendition of Man in the Mirror!
>>638 I see you, Ban Ki-moon. You're not fooling anyone.
Okay, I downloaded the NT Corio. commentary. The app itself has some interesting BTS photos (most already seen) and some short essays about various aspects of the play. There are also a few video interviews - many already seen too.
I'm going to listen to the commentary. I'll let you guys know what I think tmr.

Corio. Audio Commentary:
It was good - not great. I think HF and PDJ stole the show as far as commentary went - they had plenty of funny and insightful moments. TH and DF were alright, but - say it with me - nothing to write home about. JR has got it going on! She's bright, thoughtful, funny and confident.
There were a lot of silent stretches in the commentary. Most commentary I've listened to has a running dialogue. This one certainly had a lot of quiet time to listen to/watch the play. More BTS info and discussion would have been welcome.
TH has some insightful comments. And he mentions his hips being in a harness - a very cheap thrill, but worth the download price!
Finally, when asked to translate 'anonna plebis,' he got it wrong. It's probably been a while since he's translated any Latin, so I'm more than willing to cut him some slack, especially since he's a hot piece.
If you must have all things TH or Coriolanus, download it. If not, you'll be fine passing this one up.
>>666 I know. My eyes, my eyes. Also the musical notes ensemble was a shocker. This involves much more suffering than losing shed loads of weight.
>>667 My husband has a PhD in ancient history, also from Cambridge, and has been learning Latin since he was 5. He is currently sitting at our kitchen table surrounded by Latin texts writing an article for a journal. He couldn't translate it either without some thought. What's that about?
And ah, Peter de Jersey. Saw him in Sejanus at the RSC some years ago now. He played Macro. He was terrific - and I met him in the pub afterwards and he was great - smart and funny and very cute! Happy days....
>>669 I have a BA in Classics - my MA is in Government with an emphasis on International Relations, however, I did graduate work in Classics when I could.
Annona is just one of those obscure Latin words that you don't run across a lot. It means 'share' or 'portion' - so that 'annona plebis' would be 'the share of the plebians.' It's referring to their grain share - or corn dole, as you Brits would call it.
TH got the genitive 'plebis' correct, but translated 'annona' as 'grain price.'
Like I said, I'm going to let it slide. He can mis-translate whenever he wants!
>>670 The only laugh-out-loud moment in the commentary - for me, at least - comes courtesy of him and JR. It's hilarious. He is a cutie.
That is interesting. My hubby translated it as "corn portion". I could see it was not a literal translation but it sounds as though he was bang on in terms of its actual meaning.

I agree, though I suspect it was heavily edited and that TH actually said a hell of a lot more than we heard.
I think they were worried about people watching the play for the first time with the commentary (hence trying to avoid plot spoilers), and spent a lot of time glossing the plot and the themes at a surface level - sort of like Cliff Notes - rather than getting into the interesting technical details or even funny anecdotes about the experience of the run.
I doubt anyone is going to listen to the commentary the first time they watch the play, it'll surely mainly be listened to by people who have seen it before or listened to in isolation after people have seen it for the first time. So I think they probably pitched it wrong. Still, it's an interesting innovation and I did like hearing the few backstage details we got, like the wire and the harness - both of which were completely invisible to me - and about how they adapted the text for the production.
