I think we have said on here before that pre Hiddleswift he enjoyed a very good relationship with the press. Think of all those Guardian interviews - he was respected and liked. KB talked in that interview about what a hard Tim he had in the press and it is true - he was absolutely pilloried for being earnest, too clever by half, and ambitious. Pre-Tayto, TH wasn't criticised at all for those traits, which he possesses to a degree - it was presented as part of an endearing package. I don't recall reading a single really critical feature or interview (I'm setting aside reviews or CB which is snarky about everything and only gets it secondhand anyway).

The loss of that good standing must have shaken TH deeply. It's evident that he worked hard to be liked in interviews so to have the Guardian just write the snark without hesitation must have stung. I mean, they invited him to the WHCD a few months before.
