Also I know how you feel about your ex, which is one of the reasons I would prefer someone who thrives on challenge and competition. It starts when they become more silent than usual, at which point you're not sure whether to spare them or continuing to risk appearing superior. Personally I began berating myself, pointing out everything I did wrong, trying to show her I wasn't "that smart" and encouraging her to do some original work. But sometimes there is just no way of getting through to a depressed but gifted girl.
